Slate blue cabinets and a touch of gold give a kitchen a fresh feel
This article details the renovation of a kitchen for a Dorchester couple in Stow, seeking more space and a distinct aesthetic. Designer Jill Wheeler collaborated with the homeowners and Scott Melching Architects, with Maine Cabinet Co. laying out the initial kitchen plan. The couple, desiring a departure from a neutral palette prevalent elsewhere in their home, opted for a blue-gray cabinetry that Wheeler describes as "subtle, pretty, and avoids the modern farmhouse cliche." This choice aimed to introduce color without being overwhelming.
Several specific design elements contribute to the kitchen's refreshed feel. Distressed brown leather stools provide a contrasting color and material, adding a "lived-in look" around the island. The island's three-sided seating arrangement is designed to promote conversation and manage traffic flow, keeping the path to the pantry/mudroom clear. Above the island, blackened steel dome-shaped pendants by Regina Andrew serve as an anchor, featuring gold-leafed interiors that emit a warm glow, complementing the overall warm and inviting atmosphere.
To break up the blue cabinetry and introduce natural warmth, a natural white oak trim was incorporated at the bottom of the hood. This wood element draws cues from the flooring and is repeated in the adjacent dry bar and dining nook, creating a cohesive design throughout the extended kitchen area. An open cabinet, rather than a traditional closed one, was utilized in the upper corner. This design choice prevents the corner from appearing top-heavy and offers an opportunity for displaying decorative items such as books, adding a personal touch to the space.
Hudson Valley Lighting sconces, finished in brass, were strategically placed at the top of the room. The use of a gold finish was consistent throughout the house, and the sconces were chosen to avoid clear glass in an area that can be challenging to keep clean, prioritizing both aesthetics and practicality. For the backsplash, four-inch square ceramic tiles in a nuanced blend of whites were selected as a classic alternative to standard white subway tiles. These tiles feature a glossy, textured surface that allows light to bounce off, providing an organic and refined yet slightly rustic look.
Through these thoughtful design choices, the kitchen successfully integrates color, varied textures, and functional elements, resulting in a space that is both fresh and inviting, distinct from the rest of the home's neutral decor while maintaining a sophisticated aesthetic.
