Kitchen trends to avoid 2023 – 9 overdone looks interior designers want us to steer clear of

The kitchen, often considered the heart of the home, requires thoughtful design to ensure both practicality and aesthetic longevity. While some kitchen trends emerge as timeless, others quickly become outdated. This article highlights nine kitchen trends that interior designers and kitchen experts recommend avoiding in 2023 to create a future-proof space. Traditional farmhouse decor, characterized by elements like shiplap, mason jars, and rooster motifs, is identified as an overdone style unless one genuinely lives on a farm. This generic trend lacks personalization and is often associated with tacky barn doors that are impractical and aesthetically incompatible with modern or minimalist designs. Instead, homeowners are encouraged to choose accessories that reflect their individual taste and lifestyle. Another trend to reconsider is the use of disproportionately small pendant lights over kitchen islands. While collections of smaller pendants were once popular, they often fail to provide adequate illumination or visual balance for larger islands. The recommendation is to opt for larger pendants or chandeliers that are appropriately sized and styled for the space. Clinical all-white kitchens, once believed to be perpetually in vogue, are also fading out. Homeowners are increasingly moving away from monochrome white or gray palettes in favor of bolder and brighter colors. This shift reflects a desire for personalization, warmth, and emotional connection within the home. Natural materials, such as lighter woods like beech, ash, or oak, or richer woods like teak or walnut, are also making a comeback for cabinetry, offering a more furniture-like feel and promoting a seamless integration of living and dining spaces. Open shelving, a trend that gained traction on social media, is cited as impractical for everyday living due to its high maintenance and propensity for clutter. Experts suggest that perfectly styled open shelves demand significant effort to maintain their aesthetic appeal and are less functional as they accumulate dirt and dust. Glass cabinets or two-foot-deep, floor-to-ceiling towers are proposed as more practical and accessible alternatives for storage. Regarding countertops, granite and marble are losing favor to quartz. While granite and marble require high maintenance, quartz is a low-maintenance, durable, and aesthetically pleasing alternative that provides a natural vibe. The traditional kitchen work triangle layout, which strategically positions the fridge, sink, and stove, is becoming less crucial. With kitchens expanding in square footage and serving multiple functions, including entertaining and dining, modern designs prioritize interaction and flow over strict adherence to the triangle layout. Kitchens are evolving into open spaces where guests can comfortably interact with the host, necessitating more thoughtful spatial planning. Wooden flooring, particularly faux wood, is also seeing a decline in popularity in kitchens. While wood flooring remains popular elsewhere in the home, its susceptibility to damage in a high-traffic kitchen environment is leading homeowners to choose more functional and durable alternatives like luxury vinyl planks. Subway-tile splashbacks, once a staple of kitchen design, are also slated for a refresh. While considered timeless, the trend is moving towards patterned tiles or the use of the same material as the countertop extending up to the ceiling, creating a more fluid and cohesive look. Tiled splashbacks with numerous grout joints are also criticized for collecting mold, dirt, and food splatters. Finally, the traditional notion of kitchens solely as cooking spaces is outdated. With the rise of hybrid working and evolving lifestyles, kitchens have become central hubs for various activities, including socializing, working, and dining. Modern kitchen designs emphasize creating spaces with ample seating and comfortable areas that encourage gathering and interaction, moving beyond a purely functional culinary role. #KitchenTrends #InteriorDesign #HomeRenovation #KitchenDecor #DesignMistakes #FarmhouseStyle #ModernKitchens #CountertopMaterials #KitchenStorage #KitchenTrends #InteriorDesign #HomeRenovation #KitchenDecor #DesignMistakes #FarmhouseStyle #ModernKitchens #CountertopMaterials #KitchenStorage
