How to choose bathroom flooring - everything you need to know, according to experts

Choosing the right bathroom flooring involves balancing aesthetics with practical considerations such as durability, water resistance, and compatibility with underfloor heating. Louisa Swannell, Head of Creative Design at Walls and Floors, emphasizes the importance of considering the entire room's design when selecting flooring. For instance, a patterned tile can make a statement if walls are subtle, while a wood-design vinyl or tile might be more suitable if wall designs are prominent. Barrie Cutchie from BC Designs notes that underfloor heating systems, particularly electric ones, work well with tiles or stone flooring, suggesting this decision should precede flooring choice during renovation. A critical safety aspect is selecting non-slip flooring due to the inherent wetness of bathrooms; smooth tiles can be hazardous unless they incorporate an extra layer of slip resistance. Experts highlight three primary requirements for bathroom flooring: slip-resistance, durability, and ease of cleaning. Nick Woodward of Essential Living advises ensuring materials are completely waterproof and anti-slip. He also points out the maintenance challenge of grout lines with traditional tiles and recommends choosing floors that resist discoloration from cleaning solutions. Installation ease is another practical factor, with vinyl planks and click-lock flooring being quicker to install than labor-intensive tile flooring. Budget constraints are also significant, as vinyl is generally more economical, while natural stone like marble can substantially increase costs. Proper measurement of the bathroom space is crucial before purchasing materials to avoid waste. Certain flooring options are generally advised against for bathrooms due to their disadvantages. Barrie Cutchie specifically warns against carpets, which are unhygienic in a bathroom setting due to moisture accumulation, slow drying times, and mold risk. Hardwood and laminated flooring are also unsuitable; while they might work in other areas with some moisture like kitchens, achieving perfect sealing against constant bathroom humidity is nearly impossible. If improperly installed, these materials can rot. They also require frequent re-sealing with polyurethane coatings, more so than in less humid environments. Engineered wood, despite having real wood layers, often has non-waterproof or non-water-resistant base layers, making it susceptible to swelling and warping from spills, much like laminate floors. These options require immediate cleanup of any water. For small bathrooms, creative flooring choices can enhance the space. Louisa Swannell suggests that while patterned floors can add character, too much intricate pattern might clutter a small area. Instead, bright, light colors and glossy finishes are recommended as they reflect light, making the room appear larger. Large-format floor tiles are beneficial because fewer grout lines create a more seamless look. Laying flooring in a herringbone pattern can also visually extend a room. Nick Woodward adds that ceramic tiles in various patterns, colors, and geometric shapes can introduce energy and character to a compact bathroom. Regarding current trends, patterned tiles remain a popular choice, according to Louisa Swannell. This timeless style allows for creating a standout feature on the floor, with options ranging from encaustic and monochrome to Mediterranean and terrazzo designs, catering to diverse aesthetic preferences. These trends reflect a continued interest in personalizing bathroom spaces while still addressing the practical necessities of the environment. #BathroomFlooring #HomeDesign #InteriorDesign #FlooringMaterials #UnderfloorHeating #WaterResistance #SlipResistance #BathroomRenovation #SmallBathroomDesign #BathroomFlooring #HomeDesign #InteriorDesign #FlooringMaterials #UnderfloorHeating #WaterResistance #SlipResistance #BathroomRenovation #SmallBathroomDesign
