Forget the Conversation Pit. These Tiny Homes Have a Conversation Platform

Manuel Kohout, the founder of Vagabond Haven, embarked on a mission in 2016 to introduce tiny homes to Sweden, inspired by the practical, crafted, and adaptable small structures he encountered during his travels worldwide, such as thatch-roofed cottages, houseboats, and yurts. He began by building a prototype tiny house and lived in it with his two daughters to personally assess and refine the design, a practice he continued for many subsequent models. Vagabond Haven aims to create beautiful and practical homes that promote a sustainable and free lifestyle. The company prioritizes environmentally friendly building materials, including sheep's wool or recycled textiles for insulation and eco-friendly paints. A key distinguishing feature is the mobility of their tiny homes, with all models weighing under three-and-a-half tons, allowing them to be towed by a car. This is achieved through the use of lightweight materials such as poplar for furniture and aluminum for roofing. Vagabond Haven also caters to off-grid living by offering a range of solutions including solar panels, rainwater harvesting systems, various dry toilets, and wood, pellet, or gas stoves. Despite their small footprint, Vagabond Haven’s tiny homes are designed to feel spacious. This is accomplished by maximizing ceiling height, efficiently utilizing every available space through clever storage and hideaway solutions, and incorporating large windows on all four sides. The design philosophy aims to create an open and airy feel, often eliciting surprise from visitors at how much larger the interior seems than anticipated. The company has seen its tiny homes used for diverse purposes, including mobile restaurants, art studios, music studios, and digital detox cabins. Manuel highlights the most fulfilling aspect of his work: enabling customers to achieve a more affordable and fulfilling life by providing them with a mobile home that can be situated in desirable natural locations, often at a fraction of the cost of urban rent. He also appreciates when customers personalize their homes, such as by adding greenhouses or verandas. Vagabond Haven offers various models, with the smallest, the Nature Pod, starting at €13,000 for an empty shell. Fully equipped houses, like a 270-square-foot model, average around €50,000, while off-grid houses can reach €90,000 or more. Clients have extensive customization options for materials, including inner and outer cladding, flooring, insulation, off-grid solutions, and appliances. Furniture and color choices are also customizable. For those seeking simpler options, ready-built models based on previous orders are available. The company currently serves Scandinavia and the rest of Europe but expresses interest in expanding to the U.S. Ready-built models are delivered within two to four weeks, while custom orders have a lead time of about four months. Vagabond Haven assists with delivery, setup, and connecting to utilities, and provides necessary documentation for permits. #tinyHomes #sustainableLiving #mobileHomes #offGridSolutions #ecoFriendlyMaterials #customizableDesign #spaceSaving #VagabondHaven #ScandinavianDesign #tinyHomes #sustainableLiving #mobileHomes #offGridSolutions #ecoFriendlyMaterials #customizableDesign #spaceSaving #VagabondHaven #ScandinavianDesign
