The new owners of a classic brick row house in Cobble Hill sought to maintain its original 19th-century details while significantly improving its functionality and natural light, particularly on the garden level and top floor. Having previously worked with Manhattan-based Platt Dana Architects, they engaged the firm for a comprehensive renovation. The parlor floor, with its preserved arched opening, moldings, and mantels, largely retained its historical character, but required the addition of a powder room. The garden level, originally dark and uninviting due to low ceilings and an obstructing rear balcony, was a primary focus for transformation. Platt Dana Architects, led by partners Kate Platt and Hope Dana, undertook extensive work throughout the house, including replacing almost every wall, ceiling, millwork, lighting, molding, doors, and hardware. A key intervention on the garden level involved opening up the ceiling to expose original wood joists, which added height and a rustic aesthetic to the kitchen area. The existing rear balcony off the parlor level, which cast shadows on the garden-level kitchen, was removed. The old wood and glass doors leading to the garden from the kitchen were replaced with lighter steel-and-glass units, and the dining area was repositioned closer to these new windows, featuring a new banquette for garden views. The kitchen itself was relocated to the center of this floor. On the parlor level, the architects addressed a previous renovation that had introduced chunky wood-framed doors and windows at the back. These were replaced with a sleek steel-and-glass system from Optimum, echoing the modern elements on the garden level and significantly enhancing natural light in the rear seating area. The front hall's second opening was doubled in width, and a new powder room was strategically added. The original floors, arches, fireplaces, and radiators on the parlor floor were meticulously preserved to honor the house's heritage. For improved safety on the stairs, an unusual 'pig’s ear' handrail was custom-fabricated. The homeowners' passion for books was accommodated through the design of distinctive thin, square-shaped bookcases that line walls throughout the middle of the parlor floor and create a cozy reading area off the primary bedroom. The existing stair connecting the parlor floor's sitting room to the kitchen below was retained, but the back wall around it was entirely rebuilt with black steel windows that integrate with the lower level's new facade. The all-new kitchen features a marble-topped island, custom wood cabinets painted in Farrow & Ball's Cornforth White and Stiffkey Blue, panel-ready appliances from Sub-Zero and Miele, and a Wolf range. Reclaimed heart pine flooring from The Hudson Company was chosen to match the home's existing wood. A TV/family room is situated beyond double doors at the end of this level. The garden-level powder room was updated with a unique wall covering made from recycled magazines. The primary bedroom and its adjacent sitting room on the floor above maintained their original layout, with Platt Dana adding a long built-in banquette and new bookshelves. The primary bathroom was entirely reconfigured and gutted, resulting in a skylit space on the top floor with a new gray and white mosaic floor. The top floor underwent a complete gut renovation to create four new bedrooms and two bathrooms. This initial stage of work encompassed a self-contained au pair residence on the lower ground level, a renovation of an existing hacienda/outdoor room, a new pool pavilion at ground level, and the creation of a 'leopard dresser' and a 'bedroom nest' on the upper floor. The 'bedroom nest' represents a significant expansion, extruding a new main bedroom and ensuite from the upper level of the house over the existing hacienda. This new section features a contemporary black facade and generous openings, contrasting with the traditional form and white rendered walls of the original house. To establish visual continuity, terracotta tiles, similar to those on the original roof, were used. Twohill and James employed a distinctive detail in the diamond-cut edges of these new roof tiles, transforming the material's traditional appearance into a contemporary one. Commissioned in the mid-1980s by Jennifer Hall, who desired to live in a tower due to her "Rapunzel complex," the house was completed in 2018. It has been recognized as a nationally significant piece of architecture by the Australian Institute of Architects since the early 2000s, yet access to its interior has been limited. The house employs a traditional nineteenth-century timber construction technique, featuring exposed stud bracing, single-skin walls, and tall timber stumps. These elements are enveloped by diagonal sunshades made of galvanized steel, which complement the timber structure's pattern. While its materiality aligns with Queensland's timber-and-tin building tradition, the Carpenter Hall House deviates significantly in its construction methods and design. Russell Hall eschewed the then-common skewnailed abutted timber construction, which he believed would compromise structural stability. Instead, he adopted a technique similar to roof truss construction, utilizing machine-pressed nailplates gang-nailed to studs to ensure robust timber-to-timber connections. The dwelling's plan and form also depart from typical Queensland timber houses on stumps. Russell extruded the building vertically and introduced a unique geometric variation based on two dodecagons (twelve-sided polygons). The top-level studio occupies a smaller dodecagon with a 2.7-meter radius, circumscribed by a larger dodecagon with a seven-meter radius, whose fragments define the outlines of the four lower levels. The number twelve is a foundational element, with each side of the larger dodecagon measuring precisely twelve feet, a measurement Russell relates to the human body, being twice Le Corbusier's "modulor." The number twelve also appears in the exposed timber frame, which has twelve distinct segments, with each facet four bays wide and each level three bays high. Russell Hall's design exhibits a fascination with mathematical forms and a penchant for the surreal, reminiscent of Antoni Gaudi's work. The house evokes legendary fables, particularly Rapunzel and Sleeping Beauty. A staircase with organically shaped railing panels ascends through the dark timber interior, featuring colorful stained-glass windows that offer glimpses of the distant city, emphasizing the abode's remoteness. A family seeking a unique summer retreat in Southampton commissioned a home that deviates from the typical Hamptons shingle-style aesthetic. Architects' Alley in Kirkwood, a neighborhood of distinction recognized by the Kirkwood Landmarks Commission, is known for its homes designed to integrate seamlessly with the natural landscape. This area, particularly the winding stretch of West Adams Avenue in Sugar Creek Valley, features houses often obscured by trees during summer, becoming visible only in winter. These residences are largely Midcentury Modern and were often designed by the architects who resided in them, illustrating a deliberate connection between architecture and nature. A prime example is the home of Randy and Joy Miltenberger, a 1958 Midcentury Modern house situated on nearly 3 acres of woodland. Believed to have been designed by local architect John L. Haff, the Miltenbergers purchased the property 25 years ago as its third owners. Initially, the house retained its original 1950s aesthetic, which Randy Miltenberger, a principal at Miltenberger Architects, envisioned transforming while preserving its core principles. The couple embarked on a significant renovation, beginning with a nearly seamless addition in 1996. This renovation aimed to reconfigure the interior space, emphasizing the integration of indoor and outdoor environments. Floor-to-ceiling windows were installed across the back and sides of the house, effectively blurring the boundaries between the living spaces and the surrounding natural scenery. A new entrance was created, leading to a distinct foyer that opens into a small study. This study overlooks a covered, tree-filled atrium on the lower level, enhancing the connection to nature. The study's design includes shelves displaying Randy's collection of beer steins, artifacts, and books, while two classic leather Wassily chairs from Knoll are strategically placed to offer views of the trees outside, allowing residents to observe the changing seasons. The original traditional staircase was replaced with a green-painted spiral staircase, designed to be less obtrusive and to highlight the outdoor views. The Miltenbergers, art enthusiasts, incorporated works by Brother Mel Meyer, including a commissioned metal dining room table base, as well as blown-glass pieces by Sam Stang and paintings by Javier López Barbosa. An oversized abstract painting by Mary Sprague complements the natural views in the living room, where white walls serve as a neutral backdrop for changing artwork.
