This Energy-Efficient Prefab in Brazil Can Be Easily Expanded for More Space

Bernardes Arquitetura, in collaboration with construction company Ita Construtora, has introduced the Pipa House, a prefabricated home concept designed for adaptability and sustainability. This modular system utilizes glulam-beam structures, allowing for infinite expansion and customization to meet diverse client needs. The Pipa House emphasizes modularity, quality, sustainability, adaptability, and materiality as its core design principles. The prototype of the Pipa House features three primary volumes connected by a central hallway. The largest volume encompasses the kitchen and an open-plan living/dining area, distinguished by full-height sliding glass doors that integrate the interior with the surrounding environment, ensuring ample natural light and ventilation. Two smaller, equally sized modules house individual bedrooms, each with sliders opening onto a deck. The modular design facilitates the addition of more bedrooms or other functional spaces by simply incorporating additional units. Architect Rafael Oliveira of Bernardes Arquitetura highlights the importance of creating a home-like atmosphere through the thoughtful composition of prefab components and the enhanced use of natural materials, evoking a sense of simpler living. The interior design adopts a neutral palette, further emphasizing natural elements. The structural system is built upon eucalyptus glulam beams, enabling the home to be adapted to various site conditions. The elevated design of the house minimizes exposure to groundwater and provides easy access to utilities located beneath the floor slab. Each module is equipped with an independent HVAC system, contributing to the home's energy efficiency. The external walls are constructed from prefabricated concrete panels and full-height glass sliders, incorporating a ventilated facade system that ensures low maintenance and high thermal insulation. This design allows for the customization of the prototype to suit homeowners' evolving requirements, offering the flexibility to expand by adding more modules as needed. Additional features include a covered porch extending along the main volume, offering protection from the elements, and steps leading from the main living space to a wooden deck and swimming pool. The article also provides a floor plan and front and side elevations of the Pipa House, offering a comprehensive view of its design. Project credits list Bernardes Arquitetura for architecture and interior design, Pippa Empreendimentos + Laer Engenhairia as developer, Ita Construtora for construction, Laer Engenharia for engineering, Zamaro for electrical and hydraulic installations, Ita Construtora and Engineer Hélio Olga for the wooden structure, Marcelo Faisal for landscaping, and Lightworks for lighting, with photos by Ruy Teixeira, furniture by Ornare, and woodwork by Arali. #PipaHouse #PrefabricatedHomes #ModularDesign #BernardesArquitetura #SustainableArchitecture #GlulamBeams #EnergyEfficient #BrazilianArchitecture #ExpandableHomes #PipaHouse #PrefabricatedHomes #ModularDesign #BernardesArquitetura #SustainableArchitecture #GlulamBeams #EnergyEfficient #BrazilianArchitecture #ExpandableHomes
