Where should you put a TV in an open plan living room? Layout ideas and all-important measurements to know

Open concept living room layouts, while offering flexibility, present specific challenges, particularly regarding television placement. The objective is to position the TV for optimal viewing without it dominating the space or disrupting the room's aesthetic. Unlike traditional layouts where a TV on a wall might lead to seating facing away from the rest of the room, open plans require a more integrated approach. Experts emphasize that for frequent TV watchers, the television should have a direct relationship with the primary seating, typically the sofa, to ensure comfort. Several solutions exist for positioning a TV in an open concept room. One common approach involves making the TV a focal point, especially for households that frequently watch television. This usually means mounting it on a focal wall, such as the one opposite the main seating, above a fireplace, or a wall offering outdoor views. Interior designers suggest integrating the TV flush with the wall to maintain an open and airy feel, and this placement can also help define zones within the open space. For instance, positioning the TV above a fireplace can establish a clear focal point and area. To enhance a focal TV wall, designers recommend incorporating decorative elements like paint, interesting color effects, wallpaper, or paneling. Another strategy is to create a division in the space using a floating wall or shelving unit with some shelves open on both sides. This technique introduces zoning while allowing light to flow through the room and can beautifully integrate the TV, with the reverse side of the unit being used for artwork. Alternatively, a TV can be positioned in the center of an open floor plan, transforming it into a 'broken concept' that features partial divides. This can be achieved even with large screens due to modern TVs' sleek designs. Freestanding TVs offer flexibility, but a more common method involves integrating the TV into a custom-built millwork piece that acts as a divider between spaces. This allows the sofa to face into the open area, creating a social seating arrangement when the TV is not in use. Designing TV millwork provides both a designated spot for the television and ample storage, helping to minimize clutter and hide unsightly wires. When determining the ideal distance for TV viewing, consider the 8:1 ratio, where for every eight inches of TV screen size, the seating should be one foot away. The viewing distance should generally be between 1.5 to 2.5 times the diagonal length of the TV screen. The optimal height for a TV, when viewed from a seated position on a couch, is approximately 42 inches above the floor, designed to prevent neck strain. Interior designers suggest opting for seating below the TV instead of bulky media cabinets to reduce the television's visual prominence, as modern smart TVs often require less equipment. For mounting, if the TV is placed above a mantel, ensure sufficient depth for tilting the screen downwards to achieve proper eye level. A full-motion mount offers versatility, allowing the TV to tilt and swivel for optimal viewing from various angles. Pre-placing wiring behind walls can effectively conceal cords. Innovative solutions also include cabinets that conceal the TV, allowing it to pop up when in use, or ceiling-mounted mechanisms. For those less concerned with pixel density, ceiling-mounted projectors or portable options can be viable alternatives in spaces with light-blocking window treatments. #OpenConceptLiving #TVPlacement #InteriorDesign #HomeDecor #LivingRoomLayout #MediaWall #FurnitureArrangement #SpacePlanning #SmartHome #OpenConceptLiving #TVPlacement #InteriorDesign #HomeDecor #LivingRoomLayout #MediaWall #FurnitureArrangement #SpacePlanning #SmartHome
