We Asked Kitchen Remodel Experts What Trends Are Actually Timeless
Homeowners often seek timeless designs for their residences, especially for significant investments like a kitchen remodel. While incorporating trending elements like sage cabinet doors or open shelving might be appealing, these can quickly become dated, leading to the desire for another costly renovation. To avoid this cycle, industry experts were consulted to identify enduring kitchen design trends that maintain aesthetic appeal and functionality over time. Despite some varied opinions, common themes emerged, focusing on practicality, quality, and adaptability.
Shaker cabinets were consistently highlighted as a timeless choice, having remained stylish for over two centuries. Their simple yet fashionable design allows for repainting and continued relevance, making them a foundational element for any kitchen. John Dean, owner of Dean Cabinetry, emphasized their clean lines, which enable them to seamlessly integrate into modern kitchens despite their historical origins.
Elements crafted from natural materials also received strong endorsement. Mike Whitfield, a luxury interior expert at LUSSO, noted that "nature never goes out of style," citing natural wood cabinetry as a prime example. Cathleen Gruver of Gruver Cooley added that natural, medium wood stains and variations of white or cream cabinetry are enduring because they are rooted in nature, versatile, and easily updated with different accents or hardware.
Spacious kitchen islands were identified as more than a trend; they are considered a timeless staple. Laura Medicus, an interior designer, pointed out their utility as gathering places, homework stations, and multiple meal prep areas. Cyndy Cantley, a designer at Cantley & Company, further described them as central hubs for work, storage, and social interaction.
Nifty storage solutions are another essential and timeless aspect of kitchen design. Todd Harmon, co-founder of Harmonia Living, explained that effective storage reduces visual clutter, allowing form and function to coexist. Given the kitchen's high-traffic nature, maximizing storage space ensures a practical and efficient layout.
Neutral tones were universally praised for their enduring charm. Harmon described neutrals as a "canvas" that can absorb new trends, allowing homeowners to manipulate the mood with lighting, hardware, or styling. Kim Dreiling of Kitchen Creations, Ltd., highlighted their ability to create a calm background that adapts well to evolving interior details.
Emphasis was also placed on durable and high-quality materials. Jacob Naig, a real estate investor, stressed that a kitchen's timelessness stems from the quality of its materials rather than transient trends. Alexandra Cooper, an interior designer at Planner 5D, cited wood, stone, and brushed metals as examples of finishes that are both durable and age gracefully.
Functionality consistently overshadowed transient trends. Cooper stated that "efficiency rarely goes out of style," citing the work triangle layout principle—which strategically places the sink, stove, and refrigerator—as timeless due to its functional roots. Dean added that practical features like deep drawers for pots and pans or pull-out trash stations are perpetually valuable.
Finally, the importance of authentic personal style was underscored. Cooper advised that design should resonate with the homeowner's lifestyle rather than chasing "timelessness" for its own sake. Whitfield echoed this, suggesting that a truly timeless space is one that feels personal and enduring to the individual homeowner, rather than conforming to fleeting fads.
