7 Kitchen Trends That Will Never Go Out of Style
The kitchen is a central hub in any home, serving as a gathering space, a place for family memory-making, and a functional area for daily tasks. When designing or renovating a kitchen, it is crucial to balance warmth and function, prioritizing design choices that will remain timeless rather than quickly fading trends. This article, with insights from Heather Fujikawa, owner and principal designer at House Sprucing, and Caren Rideau, interior designer and founder of Kitchen Design Group, explores seven kitchen trends predicted to stand the test of time.
One enduring trend is the use of contrasting yet cohesive details. Instead of uniform colors and fixtures, embracing a mix of paint colors or stains allows a design to become more evergreen. This approach creates a look that is stylish now and in the future, particularly when applied to upper and lower cabinets to form a strong design base.
Fluted detailing, a subtle vertical striping technique, is another trend with lasting appeal. While currently popular, designers believe it will remain relevant. The key is to use it sparingly, perhaps on a pantry door or a set of lower cabinets, to create a modern yet timeless focal point without overpowering the space.
For color palettes, off-white combined with warm earth tones offers a classic and versatile option. A white kitchen provides a fresh and clean foundation, allowing for flexibility in decor and furnishings without requiring extensive renovations to change the look. To prevent an all-white kitchen from appearing too stark, incorporating natural elements like wood and brick or pops of color and texture through light fixtures and backsplashes can add depth and warmth.
If a more colorful approach is desired, soft, muted color palettes are recommended over dramatic hues or flashy wallpapers. Classic, neutral colors such as white, black, browns, and grays have consistently integrated into both traditional and contemporary designs, proving their ageless appeal and ensuring the kitchen remains stylish for years.
Shaker cabinets represent another timeless choice due to their clean, simple, and straightforward design. Their enduring popularity stems from their ability to seamlessly blend with almost any kitchen aesthetic. Featuring a flat, recessed center panel surrounded by a frame, shaker cabinets offer a perfect balance of form and function that will never truly go out of style.
For countertops, quartzite is highlighted as a material that combines durability with classic aesthetics. It offers the elegant look of marble but can withstand the demands of a busy kitchen. A straight-edge countertop is recommended for a cleaner installation. Finally, decorative island lighting is essential for blending form and function. As the island is often the kitchen's focal point and a task area, quality lighting fixtures like geometric chandeliers, linear pendants, or architectural globes can enhance the space and bring the final design to fruition.
