To create more distinct gathering areas and allow for privacy, a wall was re-established between the kitchen and living room, also providing additional kitchen space. The new living room was meticulously paneled with clear Western Red Cedar by Rick Rubattino's finish carpentry team, a detail the clients particularly appreciated. The living room's paneling was a product of thoughtful design, with a specific nook requiring a month of conceptualization. The much-desired powder room was ingeniously created from a former closet space near the entry, which in turn enabled one of the children's bedrooms to have an en-suite bathroom. The primary bathroom also received an update, reconfiguring the layout to accommodate two sinks and a private toilet area, a key request from the owners. Externally, the property was enhanced with a new wraparound deck and a rotunda at the corner of the house, designed to provide more usable outdoor space for entertaining. Beyond structural changes, aesthetic and functional details were integrated. Leaded glass, crafted by a specialist referred to as "Frank the Stain Glass Guy," was incorporated, notably in a bottle-bottom leaded glass pocket door for the laundry room. The clients also requested recessed lighting to brighten the interiors and opted for numerous pocket doors throughout the house, inspired by a family member's home, to offer both privacy and an open feel when desired. The condo, located on the third floor of a vintage row house, had not seen significant updates since a developer's renovation two decades prior, resulting in an uninspired and impractical living space. Studio Nato's renovation involved several key interventions. Much of the existing recessed lighting, which contributed to a dull ambiance, was removed. New white oak flooring was installed throughout the apartment, complemented by new crown moldings and window sills to restore a sense of traditional elegance. A significant improvement was made to the long hall, where a series of disparate closet doors were streamlined. These were replaced with uniform painted MDF millwork that extends almost to the ceiling, wrapping around into the kitchen. This millwork conceals reorganized coat and linen storage, along with laundry facilities, creating a cohesive and minimalist look. Additionally, new bedroom doors and a re-envisioned bathroom door were installed, painted in Benjamin Moore’s Almost Black and fitted with new brass hardware. Creative solutions were applied to previously underutilized spaces. An alcove off the front room, often a challenge in row house apartments, was transformed into a functional reading nook featuring a new custom white oak bookcase. This space was furnished with vintage Danish armchairs and a copper end table/stool by designer Andrew Neyer, adding character and utility. March & White managed all aspects of the conversion, encompassing architecture, interior design, and furnishings, resulting in a contemporary and luxurious property that aligns with the Grosvenor brand's image. A key element of the renovation was the creation of a centralized point of reference within the house. This was achieved by replacing the property’s original two sets of stairs with a single, bespoke staircase. This new staircase features wooden steps, a glazed balustrade, and a perimeter handrail with integrated lighting, creating a luminous path from the ground floor to the second floor and the newly added roof extension. The conversion work began in September 2012 with the demolition of the existing mansard roof, which paved the way for a contemporary roof extension. This extension now covers the entire footprint of the building and incorporates an outdoor terrace. The terrace is equipped with a vertical 'green' wall designed to support various plantings, enhancing the aesthetic and environmental aspects of the space. Access to the terrace from the second-floor living area is provided by a glazed frontage that includes a sliding glass door. The open-plan living area within the residence combines a media den and a wet bar lounge. The media den features bespoke joinery with specialist artisan metal lacquer and leather detailing. It also integrates a fireplace and an AV installation into the far wall, creating a fully customized entertainment system. Ceiling coffer lighting complements the media den’s white bespoke joinery and establishes a visual connection to the wet bar, situated directly opposite. The concealed wet bar incorporates a hand-finished antiqued mirror, which reflects the second-floor living space, and artisan metal lacquer detailing that becomes visible when the bar is opened. In addition to these structural and joinery elements, March & White collaborated closely with suppliers to source rich materials for luxury interior accents throughout the home. This meticulous selection of materials contributed to the establishment of a well-balanced and contemporary environment. Italian lava stone from Mount Vesuvius, with an artisan-glazed finish, has been extensively used in the kitchen, ensuite bathrooms, and WC across all floors. The master suite on the first floor is distinguished by a built-in leather-clad vanity unit with a mirror, a feature headboard wall, and cove lighting. On the ground floor, the dining room showcases bespoke joinery on either side of a specialist hand-finished antiqued mirror. This mirror frames a fireplace nestled within its center. The dining room seamlessly connects to the kitchen, with the option for separation using top-hung sliding screens that can lock into place. This project, named Headfort, provided March & White with an opportunity to leverage all their capabilities, from architecture to interior design, and to strengthen their existing relationship with Grosvenor.
