Make a statement with wallpaper

Wallpaper is experiencing a significant resurgence in interior design, shedding its former reputation for being difficult to remove and messy. Modern manufacturing processes have addressed these issues, producing more user-friendly and easily strippable wall coverings, leaving minimal to no residue. This improved versatility has led designers to use wallpaper as frequently as paint, often achieving striking visual effects. The vast array of options available, from modern retro and Victorian Rococo revival to distressed wood peel and metallic luxury silver damask, allows homeowners to personalize their spaces and express individual style. According to Maria Raco, director of NewWall in Toronto, wallpaper is designed to stand out, offering a rich variety of patterns and textures that paint often lacks, which serves as a backdrop. Christine Da Costa, an interior designer, advocates for using wallpaper in at least one room, comparing its impact to art on a wall and encouraging bold choices. Current trends in wallpaper include nature-oriented prints, such as foliage, botanicals, and continuing the tropical palm-leaf motif that began a few years ago. Other popular designs feature oversized flowers, clusters of flowers, tropical birds, clouds, and trees. Animal prints, like python, cheetah, and zebra, remain perennially stylish, particularly in fall and winter collections. The trend leans towards bright and colourful designs, encompassing patterns such as paisley and Indian-inspired or Bohemian prints. For those seeking a minimalist or abstract aesthetic, geometric patterns are available, while metallic prints can add sophistication to dining rooms or entranceways. Wallpapers that mimic tiles or crown moldings also provide design flexibility without the need for actual architectural elements. The application of wallpaper can transform an entire room or a single accent wall, allowing for the creation of diverse ambiances, from glamorous penthouse to chic urban industrial, farmhouse, or beach pad. When selecting wallpaper, practical considerations are important. Vinyl wallpaper is recommended for high-humidity areas like kitchens, bathrooms, and laundry rooms due to its ease of cleaning. Textured and embossed wallpapers are beneficial for adding depth and concealing wall imperfections, with common textures including bamboo, string, silk, or weaves. Environmentally conscious options exist, such as grasscloth wallpaper, made from natural components like woven grasses and rice paper backing, and PVC- and VOC-free wallpapers for individuals with chemical sensitivities. For first-time users, the powder room or guest washroom is often suggested as an experimental starting point due to its smaller size. Once confidence is gained, homeowners often move on to larger spaces like dining rooms or bedrooms. Creative applications extend to wainscoting, where a modern print can be applied above it, with the wainscoting painted in a complementary main colour from the wallpaper. The ceiling, sometimes referred to as the fifth wall, is also a canvas for wallpaper, with examples including cloud patterns, small stars, or stripes. A significant trend for 2019 is wall murals, distinguished from traditional wallpaper by their customization to wall measurements and lack of repeating patterns. The wider availability of diverse images, from skylines and sunsets to forest scenery, contributes to their popularity. Murals are also highly desirable for their re-stickable nature, making them ideal for renters who can easily remove and reapply them without residue. The option to create custom murals from personal photographs further enhances personalization. The continuous improvements in product quality and increased variety are driving homeowners to experiment with both wallpaper and murals, embracing these decorative options for home enhancement. Practical tips include measuring walls accurately, ordering an extra roll to account for potential colour variations between production runs, and opting for non-woven backed wallpaper for easier future removal. For expensive installations or lack of experience, professional installation is advised. Art can also be layered over wallpaper, a common design practice. #WallpaperTrends #HomeDecor #InteriorDesign #WallCoverings #DIYHomeDecor #ModernLiving #HomeImprovements #DesignTips #RoomTransformation #WallpaperTrends #HomeDecor #InteriorDesign #WallCoverings #DIYHomeDecor #ModernLiving #HomeImprovements #DesignTips #RoomTransformation
