Wall&Deco's textured wallpapers are designed "be explored with the hands as well as seen"
The design-led wallpaper company Wall&decò has introduced its Essential Wallpaper Collection, a series characterized by a diverse range of textures, inlays, engravings, and relief patterns. This collection emphasizes tactile exploration as much as visual appeal, aiming to create surfaces that invite touch and interaction. Collaborations with notable designers such as architect André Fu, Milan-based Studiopepe, and Wall&decò founder and art director Christian Benini underscore the collection's focus on material research and innovative surface design.
The brand highlights that the core principle behind the Essential Wallpaper Collection is material investigation. Each design is conceived to offer a rich sensory experience through micro-signs, 3D textures, intricate inlays, delicate engravings, and subtle metallic light details, which collectively form tangible bas-reliefs. This approach differentiates the collection by transforming wallpaper from a mere decorative covering into an interactive element within an interior space.
The wallpapers within the Essential Wallpaper Collection are constructed using a non-woven fabric substrate combined with a vinyl surface layer. This composition not only contributes to their decorative qualities but also ensures their practicality and durability. The materials chosen make the wallpapers washable, resistant to impact, and endowed with a high fire-resistance rating. These characteristics broaden their applicability, allowing them to be utilized effectively in various environments, including residential spaces like homes and high-traffic areas such as offices, even extending to moisture-prone rooms like bathrooms.
The collection's evolution began in 2017 with the initial release of designs including Deep, Kinntsu, Alya, and Vago, all conceptualized by Christian Benini. In 2018, the collection expanded significantly with additions from Studiopepe, who contributed the Nami, Kaze, and Yumi wallpapers, and André Fu, who designed the Renn pattern. Benini further added the Zip design during this expansion. The following year, 2019, saw the introduction of five more designs: Nori, Haru, and Asami by Studiopepe, alongside updated versions of existing popular designs, Vago Reloaded and Kintsu Reloaded by Benini.
Further planned additions to the Essential Wallpaper Collection in 2020 were deferred to 2021 due to the global coronavirus pandemic. The brand explained that the production process for these textured wallpapers is complex and requires extensive development time, particularly in the meticulous transposition of original material elements onto printing cylinders. This process ensures that the relief, embossing, colors, and metallic laminations are faithfully reproduced. The health emergency disrupted these crucial developmental stages, which are essential for finalizing new collections that uphold the brand's distinct material identity.
Wall&decò, founded by photographer and creative director Christian Benini, positions itself as a company at the forefront of design-led wallpaper innovation. The Essential Wallpaper Collection exemplifies its commitment to pushing the boundaries of wallpaper design by integrating texture, material integrity, and functionality. The company invites interested parties to explore the full collection on its official website, showcasing the collaborative efforts and sophisticated craftsmanship behind each piece.
