Kitchen cabinets? Or open shelving? We asked an expert for the pros and cons.

Many contemporary kitchens are moving away from traditional upper cabinets in favor of open shelving, a trend that brings both functional and aesthetic considerations. According to designer Lori May of Lori May Interiors, open shelving is most suitable for displaying collections or for storing items used daily. The decision to incorporate open shelving largely depends on an individual's habits and willingness to maintain tidiness. There are several advantages to opting for open shelving. One significant benefit is the immediate visual access it provides to stored items, eliminating the need to search behind closed doors. Open shelves also offer easy accessibility for frequently used items, such as classic white dishes that are regularly taken out and put back. Furthermore, they present an opportunity to showcase decorative pieces, like cherished Christmas china or other special occasion dinnerware, allowing guests to admire them. From a financial perspective, open shelves are typically more cost-effective than their closed counterparts. However, open shelving also comes with potential drawbacks. A primary concern is the potential for visual clutter, which can arise if the shelves are not meticulously organized. This option is less ideal for individuals who prefer to conceal plastic cups, mismatched dinnerware, or other less aesthetically pleasing kitchen items. Another consideration is dust accumulation; items that are not used regularly on open shelves will gather dust, necessitating more frequent cleaning. Additionally, open lower shelving is generally not recommended for households with small children due to safety and accessibility concerns. Finally, to maintain a cohesive and appealing look, it is often advisable to commit to a consistent theme or color scheme for items displayed on open shelves, such as an all-white dish collection. This article, originally featured in the Winter 2017 issue of Atlanta Magazine’s HOME, provides a comprehensive overview of this design choice. #homeDecor #interiorDesign #LoriMayInteriors #LoriMay #kitchens #homeDecor #interiorDesign #LoriMayInteriors #LoriMay #kitchens
