In Depth Extra: Deck fasteners
The growing demand for decks has spurred significant innovation in the fastener industry, with manufacturers focusing on solutions that offer enhanced corrosion resistance, improved ease of installation, and aesthetically pleasing hidden systems. Hidden fastening systems, for example, are gaining popularity due to their ability to create a clean, fastener-free deck surface, a preference for many homeowners. DeckWise, known for its Ipe Clip, utilizes a malleable plastic polymer resin coating to prevent wood staining often associated with all-metal fasteners. This clip, with its rigid stainless-steel insert, is designed to provide superior holding power, being three times stronger than other edge-mount deck fasteners. The company emphasizes the quality control derived from its Florida-based manufacturing, ensuring thorough research and testing of its products before market release.
Simpson Strong-Tie has also advanced its hidden fastening offerings with the EB-TY Premium system, an improvement on its original EB-TY line. This system incorporates a Type 300 series stainless steel reinforcing plate to boost stiffness and securely hold deck boards, while still allowing for seasonal expansion and contraction. The metal insert within the EB-TY biscuit prevents screws from driving through and strengthens the clip, which is crucial for hardwood decking that experiences movement due to environmental changes. To simplify installation, the EB-TY Premium system includes the EB-GUIDE, a predrilling tool that ensures screws are inserted at the correct angle, making the process more efficient for contractors.
In terms of corrosion protection, SPAX USA introduced its SPAX Exterior/Deck screw featuring HCR-X plating. This technology provides superior corrosion resistance compared to other carbon steel painted or hot-dipped screws, and it is recognized by ICC for level-four ground contact, including coastal building conditions. SPAX also offers T-star plus double-thread lock screws in 304 stainless steel for deck flooring and trim applications, as well as longer length Powerlags for structural framing of decks. Grabber Construction Products has launched Tie-Master and Lag-Master, heavy-duty, code-compliant structural wood screws designed to eliminate pre-drilling and reduce installation torque. These fasteners are versatile, suitable for various framing projects, including roof trusses, laminated beams, and ledger connections. Grabber's XGT deck and fence screws feature a QuickGrab point design for immediate starts and faster driving, along with a Draw-Tite shank to pull wood members together.
Huttig Building Products has expanded its Huttig-Grip program with Huttig-Guard fasteners, available in carbon steel and stainless steel, offering varying warranty periods up to a lifetime. The Platinum Series, with its lifetime warranty, incorporates patented threads, a double counter-sinking head, and a knurled shank for reduced drag. Unlike many competitors, Huttig-Guard employs star drive, flat head with nibs, serrated thread shank, and a type 17 self-auger point for wood-to-wood applications, contrasting with common bugle head Phillips drive screws.
MiTek’s ProSeries Fasteners, including washer head, bugle head, and hex head structural wood screws, are designed for diverse applications, including decking. These fasteners feature a cut point for fast starts and reduced torque, and screw lengths are stamped on the head for easy identification post-installation. MiTek’s Gold Coat extended-life structural connectors provide multi-layer corrosion protection, combining a zinc layer with a patented organic polymer barrier. National Nail’s CAMO Deck Fastening brand introduced a stand-up fastening tool, making installation less physically demanding for contractors and allowing for creative deck designs with either edge fastening or traditional top-down methods. Simpson Strong-Tie’s Quik Drive auto-feed system also enhances installation efficiency and ergonomics, offering both labor savings and increased safety for contractors. The availability of specialized fasteners and knowledgeable sales staff are crucial for dealers to meet contractor demands and maximize sales, offering a mix of products across different price points to attract both value-conscious and premium-seeking professionals.
