How One Designer Returned to Her Roots to Reimagine This Light-Filled Houston Manse
Nina Magon, an interior designer and founder of Contour Interior Design, undertook a significant renovation of her 11,000-square-foot home in Piney Point, Houston. Upon purchasing the property, Magon perceived a negative energy within the house, describing it as 'haunted' and 'run down' with a generally unpleasant ambiance. This emotional and energetic state of the house prompted her to seek a solution beyond conventional interior design practices.
Magon turned to Vastu Shastra, an ancient Indian system of architecture that her parents faithfully followed and which she had previously applied with success in her earlier home to address financial difficulties. Vastu Shastra, akin to the Chinese practice of Feng Shui, aims to integrate architecture with nature, ancient beliefs, and traditional Indian culture to create harmonious living spaces that positively impact the inhabitants' well-being. Magon enlisted a Vastu master who meticulously mapped out the entire house, dividing it into 16 directional zones. This detailed assessment revealed fundamental issues with the home's layout according to Vastu principles, necessitating substantial architectural changes. For instance, the family room and kitchen had to be swapped, and the swimming pool's location required relocation to align with Vastu guidelines, which prohibit water sources in certain areas. While Magon did not adhere to all Vastu recommendations, such as specific color placements, these significant structural adjustments were crucial for addressing the perceived negative energy.
Beyond the Vastu-driven structural alterations, Magon applied her extensive interior design expertise to transform the aesthetic and functionality of the home. The house, originally featuring a cream-colored plaster finish, appeared dull and dark. Magon and her team opted for a comprehensive repaint, predominantly using white tones throughout most rooms, complemented by the installation of brighter LED lighting. This decision resulted in a light-filled, airy interior that minimized the need for artificial lighting during the day. Magon chose to preserve key original architectural elements, such as the high ceilings, beautiful molding, and wood paneling in the main family room, recognizing their contribution to the house's character. Rather than removing these traditional features, she integrated them with modern European design elements, furnishing the home with pieces from renowned Italian brands like Minotti, Riva, B&B Italia, and Flexform. This approach created a contemporary yet character-rich living space.
The renovation also included specific updates in various rooms. The kitchen was outfitted with Gaggenau appliances and Eggersmann cabinetry, featuring Cosentino marble for both the floor and countertops, alongside a Gallotti&Radice hanging lamp and Molteni&C chairs. The master bedroom showcases a B&B Italia bed, with a seating area comprising a Meridiani sofa and a Molteni&C coffee table, accented by a Gallotti&Radice bench and end table. The study adopted a muted grey palette to cultivate a cozier atmosphere, furnished with Fendi armchairs and rug, and a Meridiani table. The game room downstairs incorporated a vibrant orange lounge chair from Zanotta and a Davide Groppi table lamp. The master bathroom utilized marble from Porcelanosa and Cosentino. A dynamic table by Karim Rashid for Riva served as the centerpiece in the dining room, complemented by B&B Italia chairs and a sculpture by Alexander Krivosheiw. The parlor featured Minotti seating, a Serge Mouille lamp, and a sculpture by Richard Macdonald, with a Joan Miró painting adorning the main room. The collaboration between traditional Vastu principles and modern interior design sensibilities ultimately transformed the property into a harmonious and inviting residence, alleviating the initial sense of unease felt by the designer.
