How Often You Should Wash Your Sheets (And How to Get Them Really Clean) | Reviews by Wirecutter

Maintaining clean bedsheets is essential for hygiene and comfort, as individuals spend a significant portion of their lives in bed. Sheets accumulate skin flakes, bodily fluids, oils, dust, dust mites, and pet hair over time. To ensure proper cleanliness and extend the life of bedding, weekly washing or changing of sheets is widely recommended by experts, including several authors of laundry and cleaning guides. For those with busy schedules, owning a second set of sheets can facilitate this weekly rotation. Effective cleaning begins with pretreating stains before the main wash cycle. For common stains like food, dirt, or bodily fluids, a dedicated stain remover such as Zout can be applied, following product instructions to saturate and gently rub the stained area. Tougher stains, including blood, coffee, or wine, benefit from an overnight soak in a product like OxiClean before washing. Grease stains can be effectively treated with dish soap. It's crucial to check pretreated stains after washing and before drying, as heat from the dryer can set stains permanently, necessitating a repeat of the spot treatment and wash if the stain persists. Regarding water temperature, washing sheets in low-temperature cycles, ideally cold water, is generally best for preserving the fabric. However, warmer water may be necessary for specific situations. Warm water is effective for lifting stubborn stains like coffee, while hot water is recommended for disinfecting bedding after illness, potty-training accidents, or to eliminate allergens such as dust mites. This flexibility in wash temperature underscores the importance of choosing sheets that can withstand vigorous laundering, especially for beds used by infants and children, avoiding those with overly delicate care instructions. For those considering bleaching, using white sheets is advisable, and for a brightening effect, color-safe or oxygen bleach can be used on a warmer setting. White sheets also offer a practical solution for discoloration caused by products like benzoyl peroxide, as such stains, while permanent, will be less visible on white fabric. This preference for white sheets is often adopted during product testing due to their durability and resistance to color fading over time. When dealing with new sheets, individuals with extremely sensitive skin may benefit from an extra washing step. Some wrinkle-reducing resin treatments in new fabrics can contain small amounts of formaldehyde, potentially causing contact dermatitis. Adding a quarter cup of white vinegar to the wash cycle can help remove some of these factory finishes. However, it's worth noting that these finishes also contribute to wrinkle resistance and shrinkage control, so aggressive removal might compromise these qualities. Fabric softeners and dryer sheets should be used sparingly or avoided entirely. These products leave a residue that can diminish the fabric's breathability and absorbency, potentially leading to overheating if residue accumulates. Finally, drying sheets on the lowest possible heat setting is crucial for prolonging their lifespan, preventing shrinkage, and protecting fibers from heat damage. High heat can make sheets rougher, more prone to tearing, and increase lint shedding in cotton fabrics. Even if sheets are washed in hot water, a low heat setting for drying is recommended to minimize wear and tear. #SheetCare #LaundryTips #HomeHygiene #StainRemoval #BeddingMaintenance #FabricCare #HealthyHome #CleaningGuide #TextileDurability #SheetCare #LaundryTips #HomeHygiene #StainRemoval #BeddingMaintenance #FabricCare #HealthyHome #CleaningGuide #TextileDurability
