A Bilotta Kitchen & Home Designer Gives This Kitchen a Masterful Refresh
This article details a kitchen renovation project executed by Fabrice Garson of Bilotta Kitchen & Home. The project transformed a previously cramped, dark, and dated kitchen into a bright, functional, and aesthetically pleasing space for a young family with children and a dog. The design brief emphasized the need for a beautiful yet usable kitchen, suitable for both entertaining and daily living, with ample workspace for cooking and homework, as well as extensive storage solutions. The client specifically requested a black and white color palette, desiring a 'pop' of color without resorting to overly bright hues or shades of gray.
Garson's design achieved a balance between classic and modern elements. The cabinetry, part of Bilotta’s private collection, features a clean and contemporary inset style for most units, with concealed hinges for a sleek look. The paneled refrigerator and tall pantry, however, utilize a frameless design to maximize space and seamlessly integrate appliances. The kitchen door employs a simple modern Shaker style with a step profile, contributing to the blend of classic and contemporary. The color scheme is implemented with Benjamin Moore's Super White for the perimeter cabinets and black for the central island, creating the desired contrast.
A key material choice was Calacatta Gold quartz for both the countertops and the slab backsplash. Garson explained that this man-made quartz offers the advantage of allowing clients to select precise veining patterns, leading to a dramatic book-matched design behind the range and a waterfall edge. The use of a slab backsplash, where the countertop material extends up the wall, reflects a current trend in kitchen design, offering a more contemporary aesthetic by eliminating the need for traditional tiles.
The hardware and fixtures further enhance the design's cohesion. Matte black plumbing fixtures provide a modern touch, while brass and honey bronze elements, including lighting fixtures and the knobs on the Wolf range, introduce a warm, classic accent. An original custom hood designed by Garson and manufactured by RangeCraft serves as a focal point, with its rounded edges providing a softer look compared to a typical boxy design, and its black finish tying into the overall color scheme. Despite ceiling height limitations, the hood effectively integrates into the space.
Functionality and storage were significantly improved. The renovation doubled the existing storage capacity, with careful utilization of every available space. Innovative solutions like Le Mans pullouts were incorporated into blind corner cabinets, providing easy access to stored items. The tall pantry features five rollout shelves and dedicated wine bottle storage, and numerous other roll-outs and inserts were included for various kitchen essentials, such as utensils, spices, and serving trays. Garson highlighted the collaborative client relationship as a favorite aspect of the project, crediting the clients' trust with allowing him the creative freedom to transform the kitchen's layout.
