This 1950s Connecticut Kitchen Got a Glow-Up Straight Out of a Period Drama

The article details the transformation of a 1955 Connecticut home's kitchen into a modern, functional space with an old-world bistro aesthetic. Photographer Adam Macchia, the homeowner, collaborated with kitchen designer Sarah Robertson and architect Jesse Held for the renovation. The project involved gutting the existing kitchen, expanding its footprint by incorporating a nearby family room, and enhancing natural light. Key design elements focused on creating a timeless feel through custom millwork, including crown molding and faux ceiling beams, which aimed to give the new space an aged character. The entire renovation process was documented on Sarah Robertson's YouTube channel, Kitchen Confab. A significant feature of the kitchen's redesign is the use of textured walls, achieved with crackle-glazed tile from Walker Zanger. These nine-foot-tall tiles are laid in a running bond pattern, drawing inspiration from 1920s kitchens where such tiling was common, reflecting a societal emphasis on cleanliness. For a similar look, the article suggests "Crackle White" tile by Merola Tile available at Home Depot. The kitchen's central element is an eight-foot-long, tavern-style island topped with veiny Paonazzo marble. This custom-stained and wire-brushed piece incorporates expertly turned legs and a shiny brass rail, echoing historical tavern designs. Beyond its aesthetic appeal, the island is highly functional, featuring four drawers with charging ports and an inset sink with a brass faucet, with a similar "Torak" Faucet by Kraus on Wayfair being recommended. Reflective lighting plays a crucial role in enhancing the kitchen's ambiance. A Victorian-inspired four-arm chandelier from RTO Lighting, made of faceted steel with a glass-paneled interior, is designed to magnify and distribute light effectively. Complementing this, mirrored shield-style sconces on the back wall further illuminate the space. Suggested alternatives include the Classic Mirror Chandelier by RTO Lighting and the "Brooklyn" Sconce by Troy Lighting on Wayfair. The cabinetry features a unique step-back design, with an exterior painted in Benjamin Moore's Jade Romanesque and an interior in Stuart Gold, inspired by an antique stool. This design facilitates easy access to everyday dishware. Artful accents, such as vintage art pieces and a vintage rug from Old New House, contribute to a lived-in, warm atmosphere, with a Vintage-Inspired Mallard Print from Kirklands noted as a similar item. The kitchen also incorporates a mix of metals, including Adam's copper cookware collection displayed on an eight-foot-long brass rail, and unlacquered brass knobs and pulls designed to develop a patina over time. Black heat- and scratch-resistant porcelain stoneware countertops from Laminam provide a grounding contrast to the airy palette. The appliances include a black-and-stainless steel range from Fulgor Milano, paired with creamy cabinetry painted in Benjamin Moore's Light Pewter. A Swedish-style antique corner cabinet, purchased from 1stDibs, adds a nod to Jenny (Adam's wife)'s heritage, fitting seamlessly into the corner and referencing the Gustavian era's pine cabinets. Smart storage solutions are integrated throughout the kitchen to maximize efficiency. A tall larder in the corner features racks on its doors for accessible storage, preventing items from getting lost in deep shelves. Lower drawers are designated for dog food, baking supplies, and canned goods. A microwave-sized appliance garage with retractable doors keeps counters clear. The island's reverse side also includes built-in compartments for paper towels, cleaning supplies, and other household necessities. These thoughtful storage solutions ensure the kitchen remains organized and clutter-free. #KitchenRenovation #BistroStyle #HomeDesign #InteriorDecorating #CustomMillwork #TexturedWalls #TavernIsland #ReflectiveLighting #SmartStorage #KitchenRenovation #BistroStyle #HomeDesign #InteriorDecorating #CustomMillwork #TexturedWalls #TavernIsland #ReflectiveLighting #SmartStorage
