5 Backyard Staples You Should Never Splurge on, According to Designers

When conceptualizing an outdoor living space, it's easy for homeowners to get carried away with high-end features and expensive additions. However, not all backyard staples warrant a significant financial investment. Stacy Becker, principal designer at White Label Interiors, advises against splurging on certain items, guiding clients to prioritize functionality, usage frequency, and overall cost-effectiveness. One such item is the hot tub. While often seen as a luxurious addition, Becker suggests clients evaluate how frequently they anticipate using it. If usage is infrequent (once a week or less), she recommends upgrading an indoor primary bathroom tub instead, citing lower maintenance requirements and greater cost-effectiveness. An indoor tub offers the same relaxation benefits without occupying valuable outdoor space that could be utilized for entertaining or gardening, especially in smaller yards. For those committed to an outdoor hot tub, investing in a cover lifter can significantly improve usability and maintenance, particularly during colder months. Pizza ovens also fall into the category of unnecessary splurges. Although not always the most expensive appliance, they often consume valuable counter or outdoor space. Becker notes the initial excitement around them as a "fun party trick" but encourages self-reflection on actual usage. A portable outdoor pizza oven presents a more budget-friendly alternative, reducing the financial commitment if the initial enthusiasm for al fresco cooking wanes. Outdoor televisions, while seemingly ideal for social gatherings, come with their own set of drawbacks. Becker points out issues like glare, complicated volume control, and potential noise pollution for neighbors. Instead of a permanent outdoor TV, she recommends a projector and screen setup. This low-cost, portable solution provides a similar outdoor movie night experience and can be easily stored away during unfavorable weather or when not in use. Elaborate fireplaces and high-tech grills are another area where restraint is advised. Many high-end grill models exist, but Becker emphasizes that the most expensive option isn't always necessary for enjoyment, especially for those who only grill occasionally during the summer. For creating a cozy ambiance, she suggests opting for more affordable alternatives like fire pits, which offer similar benefits without the substantial cost of an elaborate outdoor fireplace. Fire pits are well-sized and can create a warm, inviting atmosphere for a fraction of the price. Finally, over-the-top outdoor lighting schemes are often an unnecessary expenditure. While a well-lit yard is desirable, excessive lighting can be financially daunting. Becker advises consulting a landscape architect for expert guidance, emphasizing that professional advice can help avoid costly mistakes and unnecessary upsells from installers. Collaborating with a professional to plan lighting types and placement ensures an effective and efficient setup. Homeowners should also assess their electrical panel's capacity, as upgrading it for extensive wiring can be expensive. Solar fixtures offer a budget-friendly and self-powered alternative for outdoor illumination. #BackyardDesign #OutdoorLiving #HomeImprovement #DesignTips #BudgetFriendly #OutdoorLighting #SmartSpending #DesignerAdvice #HomeDecor #BackyardDesign #OutdoorLiving #HomeImprovement #DesignTips #BudgetFriendly #OutdoorLighting #SmartSpending #DesignerAdvice #HomeDecor
