6 Patio Decor Trends Designers Are Begging You to Skip This Season

In outdoor design, certain trends can quickly lead to an outdated aesthetic rather than a timeless one. Interior designers emphasize the importance of selecting enduring base pieces for patio decor, much like they would for interior spaces. Brittny Button, an interior designer and founder of Button Atelier, advocates for design choices that possess classical longevity over fleeting trends. Jennifer Jones, principal designer at Niche Interiors, also shares her insights on trends to avoid to ensure an outdoor space remains chic and current. These expert opinions collectively highlight several common pitfalls in patio decoration. One significant trend to avoid is the use of minuscule outdoor rugs. While seemingly an economical or charming accent, a rug that is too small fails to properly anchor the furniture within the space, making the area appear disjointed and visually awkward. Designers recommend that outdoor rugs should be large enough to extend beyond the furniture pieces, ideally accommodating at least the front legs of sofas and chairs, to create a cohesive and well-defined zone. Layered outdoor rugs are suggested as an alternative to add depth, texture, and contrast effectively. Another overused trend is the reliance on string lights or fairy lights for ambient lighting. Although they can create a cozy atmosphere, designers suggest they have become commonplace and less sophisticated. A more elevated approach to outdoor illumination involves using rechargeable LED lamps. These provide a subtle and appropriate glow, are easy to reposition, and contribute to a more refined aesthetic. Decor that does not align with the overall aesthetic of the outdoor space is also a trend to sidestep. Button's design philosophy involves questioning whether a decor piece would fit a specific, aspirational setting, such as a French villa or a British manor. This method helps maintain a consistent visual narrative and prevents the accumulation of mismatched items. Ensuring that every decor element contributes to a unified theme is crucial for a harmonious outdoor room-scape. Brightly colored planters are another trend that designers advise against. The primary focus of outdoor planters should be to showcase the plants and flowers themselves, allowing their natural colors and textures to be the stars of the display. Boldly colored pots can detract from the beauty of the foliage. Instead, neutral-toned terracotta or ivory glazed ceramic pots are recommended as they blend seamlessly with the natural environment and allow the plants to stand out. Oversized patio umbrellas, while practical for shade, are often considered visually overwhelming and can diminish the overall appeal of an outdoor area. These large structures can dominate the space and detract from other design elements. A better alternative includes smaller, strategically placed tiltable umbrellas. For areas requiring extensive shade, designers suggest installing an awning or a freestanding portico. Incorporating natural canopies, such as planting shade-providing trees or training fast-growing vines on pergolas, offers a sustainable and aesthetically pleasing solution. Finally, the use of individual lounge chairs is less favored compared to daybeds. Lounge chairs can make a patio appear cluttered and offer limited seating capacity. Daybeds, on the other hand, are praised for their generous width and enhanced comfort, resembling mini beds. Designers prefer daybeds with wheels for easy repositioning, or they suggest adding casters to stationary daybeds to improve their mobility, allowing for greater flexibility in outdoor layouts and functionality. #PatioDecor #OutdoorDesign #HomeImprovement #InteriorDesignTrends #OutdoorLiving #DecorMistakes #TimelessDesign #GardenDecor #PatioDecor #OutdoorDesign #HomeImprovement #InteriorDesignTrends #OutdoorLiving #DecorMistakes #TimelessDesign #GardenDecor
