Legendary Designer Jean-Charles de Castelbajac Enhances Universe With Bold Home Projects
Jean-Charles de Castelbajac, a renowned designer with a career spanning over five decades, is expanding his creative footprint into the home design sector. Known for his distinctive use of pop colors and forms, de Castelbajac recently collaborated with historic textile-maker Pierre Frey at Milan Design Week 2025, a partnership that marked a significant step in his focus on home furnishings. This move follows a career where he has dressed figures from Farrah Fawcett to Pope John Paul II and cofounded Iceberg, collaborating with iconic artists such as Andy Warhol and Keith Haring. His work consistently blurs the lines between art, fashion, and design, a philosophy he now applies vigorously to home projects.
De Castelbajac's upcoming home collaborations include a new furniture collection with Hall Haus, a design-forward studio, and a second collection with Pierre Frey, set to debut at Maison & Objet in September. Additionally, he is developing new outdoor designs for Fermob and tableware with Gien Earthenware. These projects underline his commitment to infusing residential spaces with his signature aesthetic. His career retrospective, featuring 300 pieces from five decades, will open in December at the Les Abattoirs museum in Toulouse, with plans for a global tour including Los Angeles, New York City, and Vienna.
The designer views the home as more than just a functional space, describing it as an "installation" or "scenography." He emphasizes the importance of creating environments composed of various elements that elevate living spaces, a philosophy evident in his earlier works like the Jean-Charles sofa for Ligne Roset and his upcycled Rubik’s Cube cushions from the 1980s. He believes in timeless design, where pieces, like his 18th-century-inspired camouflage chair, remain relevant across eras by blending historical and contemporary influences to create a unique universe.
De Castelbajac's iconic use of primary colors, which he started in the 1980s with color-blocked projects inspired by cartoon aesthetics, remains a cornerstone of his work, bringing joy and energy. This approach extends to his art direction for the reopening of Notre Dame de Paris and his creations for World Youth Day. He sees his diverse projects, from fashion collaborations with brands like Palace Skateboards to his home designs, as interconnected expressions of his vision.
He differentiates his current design approach from the traditional "5 Ps" (produce, pricing, positioning, publicity, public) of the 1980s, advocating for the "5 Es" (emotion, experience, ecology, e-commerce, entertainment). This shift reflects a desire to immerse people in his artistic vision, offering them an experience that transcends mere product consumption. Despite his current focus on home design, he expresses a longing for fashion, viewing it as a universal language capable of democratizing art and creating cultural narratives, indicating a potential return to the fashion world in the future. His latest collection with Pierre Frey, "The Color of Our Dreams," and other forthcoming projects with Fermob, Gien Earthenware, Drawing Lab, Leblon Delienne, and Les Emaux de Longwy, continue to explore playfulness, poetry, and a sense of wonder, aiming to bring hope and shared values through design. #JeanCharlesDeCastelbajac #HomeDesign #Furniture #MilanDesignWeek #PierreFrey #PopColor #DesignCollaboration #ArtisticDirector #TimelessDesign
