Q&A with Interior Designer John De Bastiani
This article features a question-and-answer session with interior designer John De Bastiani, who recently established his interior design business in Santa Barbara after relocating from Boston and Los Angeles. De Bastiani shares insights into his career path, design philosophy, and personal preferences.
His journey in design commenced in Boston, where he worked at the esteemed fabric house Brunschwig & Fils, subsequently designing home interiors throughout the greater Boston area. In 2007, he moved to Los Angeles and gained valuable experience working for renowned interior designer Michael Smith before launching his independent practice. De Bastiani expresses a lifelong passion for interiors and design, stating that his expertise lies in blending practical experience, historical knowledge, and his innate taste.
Approximately a year prior to the interview, De Bastiani fully transitioned to Santa Barbara, a city whose Spanish architecture and grand estates, along with its supportive and kind community, captivated him. He operates his business from a home office located in Romero Canyon. The interview delves into the origins of his attraction to design, highlighting his early love for art and art history, and decorative arts, which he sees as a creative outlet without being a fine artist.
When asked about his favorite work-related field trip or vacation, he identifies Mexico City. For design inspiration, he looks beyond home projects to a variety of sources including travel, Instagram, and nature, noting that inspiration can stem from something as specific as a Spanish tile or a fantastic organic modern home. He articulates that his favorite aspect of his work is the creative process and the inherent project-based nature of design, which allows him to merge these two interests.
Conversely, De Bastiani states his least favorite aspects of the job are difficult clients and unrealistic budget expectations. Pondering an alternative career, he would choose to be a shop owner specializing in home furnishings, antiques, and vintage items. His current state of mind is hopeful, and his ideal of perfect happiness involves managing three well-paced large-scale projects annually with clients who are receptive to his design process. His most significant professional achievement was having one of his projects featured on the cover of *House Beautiful* magazine, while his greatest fear is a lack of business. He considers his greatest extravagance to be Brunello Cucinelli.
Regarding virtues, he deems being a “professional Instagrammer” as overrated. The talent he would most like to possess is being a flower arranger, and if he could change one personal trait, it would be to cultivate more patience. His most cherished possession is his 1969 Mercedes 280SL. Among living individuals, he most admires Jane Fonda and most despises Kim Kardashian. Loyalty is the quality he most values in his friends, and his most marked characteristic is being a kind and generous friend. His favorite fictional character is Lord Grantham from *Downton Abbey*, and he identifies Barack Obama as a real-life hero. He admits to lying on occasions when the truth might hurt someone’s feelings and frequently uses the phrase “1,000 percent!”
