The Acropolis of Athens among the multiple lighting design entries to win the 2021 LIT Design Awards
The LIT Design Awards, an annual program recognizing excellence in lighting products and applications, recently announced its 2021 winners. The awards operate on the principle that lighting is a crucial design element, combining both art and science, and is fundamental to human perception and energy. The Farmani Group, also responsible for other prestigious design awards, established the LIT Design Awards to highlight creativity and innovation within the lighting industry. The competition features 47 categories for Lighting Product Design and 31 for Lighting Design, making it a comprehensive platform for the industry. A panel of esteemed jurors, consisting of professionals in lighting, interior design, and architecture, selects the winning entries. Winners receive the LIT trophy, a $1000 cash prize for emerging designers/products, and significant international exposure.
Among the top honorees for 2021, Eleftheria Deko & Associates unanimously received the Lighting Designer of the Year Award for their work on the new lighting scheme for the Acropolis of Athens and its monuments. This project focused on subtly enhancing the historical landmark rather than drawing attention to the lighting itself. The design aimed to illuminate the Acropolis to make it visually striking at night from various perspectives, both close-up and from a distance, effectively revitalizing the ancient monuments. The LIT Lifetime Achievement Award was presented to Tony Lawrence, Lighting Product Director at Concord Lighting (part of Feilo Sylvania), and Craig A. Bernecker, Professor of Lighting Design at Parsons School of Design and founder of the Lighting Education Institute. The 2021 Spotlight Prize was awarded to the LUCI Association, a non-profit organization that brings together over 70 cities globally to promote the use of light for social, cultural, and economic development.
Additional notable winners showcased a diverse range of innovative lighting designs. Opteris Studio earned the Lighting Product Design of the Year award for their 'Opteris Chandelier,' an organic and asymmetric fixture inspired by a deep-sea creature. Koert Vermeulen & ACTLD's 'Star in Motion,' a massive star-shaped installation atop the Kingdom Tower, illuminated the Riyadh skyline during the Noor Riyadh 2021 festival, symbolizing the theme 'Under One Sky.' Tungsten Studio's 'Nantong Grand Theater' was recognized for its architectural lighting, which complements the building's undulating roof and artistic facade, making it visually appealing from all angles. Deep Origin Innovation Lab's 'Hanabi 2020' installation, named after the Japanese word for 'firework,' used thousands of LED-tipped pipes to create the impression of an exploding firework, symbolizing the ephemeral nature of pain and the beauty of memories. Kuzco Lighting's 'Serif Collection' featured minimalist, angular light rings that are individually adjustable, allowing for both 2D and 3D configurations. Lastly, CA PLAN's 'Urban Bloom' project transformed the Galleria Department Store in Daejeon with 5700 algorithmically designed petal modules. These petals, embedded with LEDs, create a dynamic visual experience that shifts with natural light during the day and transforms into a massive lighting installation at night.
