‘I’ve used landlord-friendly hacks to make it my own!’ says this colour-happy London renter

This article showcases how an Instagrammer, @ohsorented, transformed her new-build London rental apartment into a personalized, vibrant living space using landlord-friendly hacks and clever decorating ideas. The renter, who sought a modern flat with freshly painted walls and city views as a "blank box" to customize, details her journey from flat-hunting to creating a 'Colourful Scandi' aesthetic. Upon finding her ideal new-build apartment, she meticulously planned the layout and decor using Pinterest boards. Her strategy involved investing in furniture made from natural materials like cane and light woods, allowing for the easy addition of color through inexpensive and interchangeable accessories. She chose two key colors for each room to contrast with the white walls, defining her style as "Colourful Scandi." The article highlights her approach to various areas of the open-plan apartment. For the living room, where she primarily works, she focused on creating a homely and comfortable environment. She purchased a green velvet sofa-in-a-box from Snug, appreciating its color, upholstery, and timeless shape. A home office area was established in a corner of the living room with a desk and cane chair from French Connection. To address unsightly radiators, she customized B&Q covers with cane webbing, an initial DIY project that proved successful. She accessorized these and other areas with colorful plant pots, vases, and candles from independent shops like Etsy. In the kitchen, a practical splashback was created using removable vinyl stick-on tiles from The Loft & Us, mimicking expensive handmade designs. She also incorporated peppermint-colored appliances and a microwave with a wooden handle for a natural touch. The open-plan layout is noted for preventing the small flat from feeling enclosed. The renter enjoys moving items between rooms to refresh the space, using pieces like a Made.com cake stand and a Swoon cocktail trolley to enhance the aesthetic. When her boyfriend moved in, storage solutions were devised, including a pink chest of drawers from Dunelm for the narrow hallway and a gallery wall created with lightweight items secured by command strips. In the bedroom, a divan bed with storage drawers was chosen, complemented by a freestanding cane headboard from La Redoute and light wooden furniture to foster a relaxing environment. Another cane radiator cover was added for extra shelf space. She installed sheer curtains at the large windows but noted a future consideration for blackout curtains due to the room's brightness. The bathroom was styled with a stick-on glass film to create a reed effect on the shower screen, and colorful storage was introduced with a pink craft trolley from Hobbycraft. The article concludes with the renter's positive outlook on her decorated rental, emphasizing that while it's not her forever home, personalizing it with color brings joy and inspiration daily. She acknowledges some downsides of new builds, such as a toilet leak that required flooring replacement, but stresses that her non-permanent decor choices make it easy for the flat to revert to its original state when she eventually moves out. #RentalDecorating #LandlordFriendlyHacks #ColourfulScandi #OpenPlanLiving #DIYDecor #LondonRental #HomePersonalization #InteriorDesign #SmallSpaceSolutions #RentalDecorating #LandlordFriendlyHacks #ColourfulScandi #OpenPlanLiving #DIYDecor #LondonRental #HomePersonalization #InteriorDesign #SmallSpaceSolutions
