This Nature-Inspired Home Makeover by Mint Interior Design Offers A Breath of Fresh Air
A 3,800-square-foot split-level property, originally built in the late 1970s and located on 40 acres of fields, prairie, and wetlands in the Twin Cities' western suburbs, underwent a significant main-level remodel by Mint Interior Design. The homeowners, who had previously updated the house in 2005, desired a lighter, brighter, and more livable space that reflected their personalities and was more conducive to entertaining. The existing interiors were characterized by a dated burgundy-and-gold color scheme, worn furnishings, and golden oak floors, cabinetry, and ceiling beams.
Maureen Haggerty of Mint Interior Design led the transformation, starting with the removal of the old color palette. The kitchen, which previously featured gold-tiled backsplash, received an update with an ivory tile backsplash and an island painted in Benjamin Moore Monroe Bisque, a warm, creamy shade. The design strategy focused on establishing purposeful layers and incorporating both warm and cool elements to enhance architectural details and the clients' extensive collections. Existing pieces were updated, such as the McGuire target-back dining chairs from 2005, which were re-upholstered in a Schumacher woven stripe fabric that served as the color wheel for the entire space and amplified the cinnabar finish of the frames.
A primary goal of the remodel was to integrate the outdoors with the indoors, a desire that aligned with the homeowners' passion for horticulture and their efforts in cultivating the surrounding land into native prairie, a pond, wetlands, and wildlife habitats. The design also aimed to prominently display the clients' beloved collections, including folk art and over 100 vintage wall pockets. Curating these diverse items was a collaborative effort involving Haggerty, art consultant Nicole Kappus Solheid of NKS Artsource, and the client, ensuring each piece complemented the new décor.
In the living area, custom coffee table made from the client's grandfather's barn wood served as a centerpiece, complemented by side panels crafted from vintage Belgium linen. Kappus Solheid assisted with the placement of existing artwork and sourced additional pieces, such as a colorful abstract painting in the living area, to create unexpected connections within the collections. The dining area featured a trio of John J. Audubon bird prints, selected by Kappus Solheid based on the clients' list of birds found on their property, including a green heron, sandhill crane, and trumpeter swan.
The screened porch, previously a jumbled and underutilized pass-through area, was transformed into a sanctuary. It now features weather-resilient furniture, a custom-made daybed from knotty pine, and an over-dyed rug from Pakistan, adding color that echoes the sky. A side table displays vintage pots, and a wall showcases prized wall pockets, some from Czechoslovakia. This space became a favorite spot for coffee breaks and catnaps, effectively encapsulating the homeowners' personalities and their connection to nature, reflecting their lifestyle and passion for the outdoors within their home environment.
