A Catch-All Bonus Room Gets a Redesign
This blog post details the transformation of an open third-floor bonus room in a Cambridge home. Initially, this space served as a multi-purpose area, functioning as both a playroom and a storage area for miscellaneous household items. It also intermittently served as a guest room, though its open-plan nature offered little privacy. The existing design was largely utilitarian, featuring a long counter with dual desks, track lighting, a central support beam with a distinctive geometric cutout, and beige carpeting throughout the floor.
Recognizing the potential for a more defined and functional space, the homeowners engaged Charlie Allen Renovations, designer Jayme Kennerknecht, and architect Tom Downer. The collaborative effort spanned from July to October 2014, with the primary objective of redefining the room's layout and aesthetic to better suit the family's needs.
A significant alteration involved the construction of new walls and the installation of French pocket doors. These additions were crucial in creating a dedicated, private guest room within the larger space. To enhance the functionality of this new guest suite, a closet was incorporated, and the existing window was replaced with one that matched the architectural style of other windows in the house. The door hardware in the guest suite was finished in oil-rubbed bronze, adding a touch of elegance.
The remaining portion of the third floor was subsequently transformed into a dedicated playroom for the family. This redesigned area features a crafting station, providing a dedicated space for creative activities, and a specialized shelf for toy storage, helping to keep the area organized and clutter-free. The flooring throughout this renovated space was a point of consideration, with cork being an initial option. However, the homeowners ultimately opted for stained hardwood, which contributes to a refined and durable finish.
The walls of the entire redesigned area were painted with Benjamin Moore’s “Cloud White,” creating a bright and airy atmosphere that complements the new functionalities of the room. This redesign effectively converted an undefined, catch-all area into a highly functional and aesthetically pleasing space, addressing the family's need for both a private guest room and an organized playroom.
