Shanghai Tang Mansion, Hong Kong
The Shanghai Tang brand has established its retail presence with a three-story 'mansion' on Duddell Street in Hong Kong, marking its largest and most visually striking flagship store. Spanning 1,400 sq m, this impressive establishment features exterior art deco detailing illuminated by panels of light. The project's completion in just nine months, following the loss of the brand's previous lease, highlights a rapid and ambitious turnaround.
Interior design firm Design MVW, based in Shanghai, drew inspiration from ancient Chinese craftsmanship to create a contemporary Chinoiserie aesthetic. This is evident through the use of bold color-blocking, hand-painted wallpapers, and tall wrought-iron paneling. The spacious interiors are designed to maximize natural light, which is channeled throughout the building via a central grand stairwell. Attention to detail is a hallmark of the design, with elements like a multi-tiered crystal chandelier in the foyer, shaped like the Chinese character 'shou' (longevity), and traditional Chinese lanterns reimagined as glowing white pendants guiding visitors to the upper floors.
The design incorporates various architectural and decorative features that add depth and character. Vaulted ceilings are internally lit and shaped like Mongolian yurts, while doorways are designed as ancient round portals, with one even echoing the contour of an antique vase. The dark-stained flooring is adorned with intricate brass inlay, and the shelving units are crafted to resemble antique lacquer étagères. These details contribute to an immersive and richly textured environment.
Beyond its striking interior, the Duddell Street mansion offers exclusive merchandise and services. These include Shanghai Tang's new line of bicycles, a children's collection, a bespoke tailoring service, homewares, and a dedicated fragrance bar. The homewares section features a typical round Chinese door, while changing areas are decorated with hand-painted Chinese scenes and vibrant garden motifs. The flamboyant color palette of the interior serves to complement the brand's vividly colored apparel.
Specific design elements further integrate Chinese cultural symbols. In the womenswear section, brass inlay in the wooden floors forms a peony, symbolizing romance and prosperity. The menswear section also features the 'shou' character as inlay, and a central island in the sportswear area draws inspiration from polo mallets, with the ceiling echoing a Mongolian yurt. The menswear section evokes the ambiance of a gentleman's club infused with distinct Chinese characteristics. Located at 1 Duddell Street, Central, Hong Kong, the Shanghai Tang Mansion stands as a significant retail destination, blending fashion with sophisticated design and cultural heritage.
