The project, named "Smart Zendo," is located in Tung Chung on Lantau Island, offering views of the surrounding hills, and draws its name from a Zen meditation space. The design harmoniously blends Zen and Feng Shui principles with adaptable, high-tech features to accommodate the evolving needs of family life. Lam's solution involved reconfiguring the apartment into a three-bedroom layout with an optional fourth bedroom in the living room. Natural materials like plywood and timber veneer clad surfaces, concealing numerous smart features such as voice-activated synthesizers, lighting and air-conditioning controls, curtain mechanisms, a retractable coffee table, projection screens, and smart door locks. Lam's interpretation of a "smart" home is entirely client-driven, allowing spaces to transform based on daily needs. The living room was elevated on a wooden platform, providing extensive underfloor storage. A section of this platform houses a high-tech coffee table that can be raised for tea ceremonies and social gatherings or lowered flush with the floor to create a lounge or play area for their son. Further enhancing functionality, a gray, timber-veneer TV cabinet spans almost an entire living room wall. This cabinet incorporates display nooks for treasured items, designed according to Feng Shui principles with a symmetrical form reminiscent of the Chinese character for "wood." It also conceals a folding timber partition, which can be deployed to create an additional bedroom for guests. Louvres at the top of the partition ensure ventilation, while embossed strip glass allows natural light to penetrate while maintaining privacy. An open-plan kitchen was introduced adjacent to the living space, and the original kitchen was repurposed into a maid's room and storage area. The quartz dining bench and timber benches feature built-in storage to maintain a clutter-free environment. Other intelligent design elements include a timber platform in the son's bedroom, which provides hidden storage and serves as seating for a desk, and a concealed make-up table in the master bedroom. Large timber-frame windows throughout the apartment maximize natural light and frame views of the surrounding hills, evoking the clients' cherished memories of homestay vacations in the Taiwanese countryside. Mr. Chow, an entrepreneur in Jinhua City, China’s Zhejiang Province, acquired a spacious 5,381-square-foot four-level home, which, despite its ample balconies and courtyard, suffered from a significant lack of natural light. To address this, he commissioned Liang Architecture Studio for a comprehensive renovation, completed in December 2019. The core of the renovation involved transforming the home’s central space. The design team removed the second and third-level floor slabs in the foyer, creating a dramatic, voluminous atrium that extends from the basement to the roof. This open core now serves as the central focal point of the residence, significantly improving light penetration. Structural beams within this soaring space were deliberately retained to honor the building’s history, while footbridges on the second and third levels connect the two sides of the building, maintaining continuity and flow across the expanded void. To maximize natural light and introduce dynamic visual effects, the entire interior volume was crowned with a perforated aluminum panel situated beneath a glass roof. This innovative addition allows for a captivating interplay of natural light and shadow throughout the day, constantly shifting and animating the interior spaces. Furthermore, new perimeter window openings were strategically added to further enhance light distribution throughout the home. The layout of the home was reconfigured to optimize functionality and foster a more convivial atmosphere for the family. The second floor is dedicated to the children’s bedroom and bath, a secondary living room, and a study, offering private and communal spaces for the younger residents. The third floor features an expansive master suite, an additional study/bedroom suite, and a terrace, providing luxurious and private retreats. The basement was transformed into a recreational area, equipped with a home theater, gym, tearoom, and a sunken courtyard at the base of the new atrium, offering diverse options for relaxation and entertainment. The comprehensive space accommodates coffee roasting, retail, and event functions. The design seamlessly merges new elements with the old structure while preserving the building's historical traces from previous renovations. The design approach incorporates a minimalist aesthetic, utilizing a restrained material palette predominantly featuring stainless steel and concrete. A key design element is a 6mm-thick horizontal steel plate that traverses the entire space, acting as a unifying feature between the existing and newly introduced architectural components. The central area of the café is designated as a flexible, multi-functional space, delineated by a stainless steel rail system. This system serves multiple purposes, accommodating lighting fixtures, monitoring equipment, and metal curtain partitions. These rails are strategically positioned along the columns and beams, allowing for symmetrical distribution. The lower layer of the rail system specifically holds the metal curtains, which can be retracted around the columns to open up the space or extended to create partitions, enabling versatile spatial configurations. Stainless steel panels are also ingeniously integrated into the ceilings to conceal the Mechanical, Electrical, and Plumbing (M.E.P.) systems, ensuring a clean and uncluttered overhead aesthetic. These panels additionally define the outlines of the staircase, bar, and seating areas. The staircase itself is constructed from layered stainless steel sheets, with the edges meticulously shaped to offer ergonomic comfort, conforming to the natural curve of a person's back. Similarly, the movable benches positioned near the entrance are fabricated using a sheet structure, echoing the material consistency and design philosophy. Even minor details, such as the door handle, incorporate the distinctive 6mm-thick horizontal-line element, reinforcing the coherent design language throughout the café. A prominent feature of the café is an 8-meter-long floating bar counter. This counter is cleverly integrated with the building's original structure, a feat achieved through close collaboration with steel structure engineers and baristas. The steel structures and pipelines necessary for the bar's functionality are discreetly hidden within the counter's cavity, facilitating efficient coffee preparation for baristas. The substantial volume of this floating counter creates a sense of surrealism and paradox within the interior, while also providing customers with an unobstructed view of the baristas at work, enhancing transparency and interaction. The design also incorporates mirrors on the walls, extending from the height of the bar counter to the floor. These reflective surfaces, which harmonize with the stainless steel materials, act as a contrasting backdrop to the preserved historical elements of the building. One-way mirrors are utilized on the wall facing the bar counter, concealing an LED screen. This mirrored finish visually extends the horizontal lines present throughout the space and offers the capability for video displays, adding a dynamic visual element. The facade features a 12-meter-long stainless steel sliding door, designed to dynamically express the 'Basdban' brand's personality while respecting the building's historical context. When open, the newly installed doors and windows are revealed, and the original facade is fully obscured. Manhattan homeowner Susan Tsui Shan Lee embarked on a renovation of her early-20th-century Tribeca apartment, collaborating with the Brooklyn- and Detroit-based architecture firm Dash Marshall. Lee discovered Dash Marshall at a conference in Cambodia and was impressed by their willingness to accommodate her specific requests, such as two ovens for entertaining. The apartment, originally converted in the early 1980s, was in a dated condition, featuring elements like a pink-tiled bathroom, an illegally converted bedroom, a Jacuzzi in the main bedroom, and a retro kitchen. Despite the initial state, architect Ritchie Yao noted existing appealing features like an original brick fireplace and an expansive brick wall. The renovation presented challenges due to the apartment's long and narrow layout, further complicated by the disorganized second bedroom. Dash Marshall's primary goal was to define distinct living areas while ensuring a seamless flow, aligning with Lee's interest in feng shui principles. A core tenet of feng shui is the concept of continuous movement and the avoidance of sharp corners, which the architects integrated into their design. The kitchen became the central focus of the renovation, receiving the majority of the design effort and budget. Instead of conventional shelving and cabinetry, the architects aimed to create a single, cohesive, curving unit to adhere to feng shui's flow principles. To achieve the desired curves, the architects utilized tambour paneling, a material composed of timber battens on a flexible backing. This allowed them to conceal cabinets, range hoods, and the refrigerator within pale oak curves. Some cabinets were designed to cantilever, creating a layered, almost geological effect. Despite the complex, Zaha Hadid-esque design, the cabinetry was meticulously built by hand and installed in sections through the exterior windows. Lee expressed high satisfaction with her new kitchen, often working from the island. Beyond the kitchen, the architects designed various lounge areas for relaxation. In the apartment's front, a custom curved window seat was integrated to conceal an old radiator, offering a comfortable spot for morning coffee and reading. At the opposite end, two additional flexible seating areas were created: one by the brick fireplace and another in the former second bedroom's footprint. A round artwork by Pamela Jordan added a touch of color to the otherwise neutral, serene space. Dash Marshall also made sculptural use of drywall, blending it seamlessly with the tambour kitchen and ensuring smooth corners throughout the apartment, thereby creating a soft and textured environment. The main bedroom was kept simple, featuring white walls, white oak flooring, and exposed brick. Inside the Atrium House, the interiors continue to reference Chinese heritage through specific architectural details. The banquet space features a dramatic stepped ceiling designed to emulate rice terraces, mirroring the varying depths of the planters on the pavilion roofs.
