copper pipes & terrazzo-like tiling adorn dongqi design’s brewery project in shanghai
Dongqi Design completed the flagship 'Boxing Cat Brewery' (BCB) in Shanghai's Xintiandi district, a project that blends craft beer culture with the historical context of a renovated heritage building. The two-story establishment pays homage to the city's past through the use of rough-textured elements, deep warm colors, and the integration of the original facade wall within the building's atrium. The design philosophy centers on the concept of a 'beer garden,' evident in various interior features.
The ground floor's design includes curved bench seating crafted from natural wood and leather, strategically placed around the preserved old wall and within the atrium. These seating areas incorporate plants at their centers, contributing to a fresh and inviting atmosphere. An arched doorway is repurposed to house a bar table and an electric fireplace, while two other archways lead to an additional seating space and a bar counter. A prominent design element is the chrome 'pipe system,' which visually connects different areas of the interior. These pipes extend from beer lines to the ceiling, integrate into custom lamps, and frame menu boards, creating a cohesive industrial aesthetic.
At the atrium level, some of the building's original concrete walls are left exposed to highlight the district's historical significance. This raw aesthetic is contrasted with a polished brick-and-cement tiling pattern that forms a terrazzo-like floor finish. This unique flooring extends vertically, transitioning into a rough, exposed aggregate layer on the walls. Overhead, halved BCB kegs are creatively repurposed to house planting and lighting, arranged linearly across the ceiling, adding to the brewery's distinctive character.
Further within the brewery, a U-shaped beer bar is positioned to face the main entrance. This bar features vertically arranged copper pipes along its elevation, with every fourth pipe serving as a functional beer tap. The bar top and floors are finished with natural wood, which provides a softening effect against the more industrial elements. The back wall of the bar is adorned with the same brick pattern as the atrium floor, and subtle lighting from behind the bricks enhances its visual appeal. The second floor provides additional seating and houses the kitchen facilities. For safety and a degree of privacy, dongqi design incorporated laser-cut and curved handrails along the perimeter of this level, ensuring an unobstructed view of the vibrant atrium garden below. The original wooden structure of the ceiling is partially retained, with other sections coated in a maroon color. Dongqi Design emphasizes that various elements, such as chrome pipes, rust-finish steel panels, maroon tones, and branded details, collectively contribute to the strong personality of the Boxing Cat Brewery.
