The project covers an area of 175 square meters and was completed in 2022. The primary architects in charge were Lyndon Neri and Rossana Hu, with Qiucheng Li serving as the associate in charge. The design seamlessly merges new elements with the old structure while preserving the building's historical traces from previous renovations. The design approach incorporates a minimalist aesthetic, utilizing a restrained material palette predominantly featuring stainless steel and concrete. A key design element is a 6mm-thick horizontal steel plate that traverses the entire space, acting as a unifying feature between the existing and newly introduced architectural components. The central area of the café is designated as a flexible, multi-functional space, delineated by a stainless steel rail system. The brewery is housed within two buildings, with potential for a third, designed by the renowned architect Alexander Eschweiler. These Chicago red brick structures, located at 2200 W. Mount Vernon Ave. in the Menomonee Valley, were originally constructed in 1902 for the Milwaukee Gas Light Co., serving as the power company's west side plant. The "Mountain House in Mist" is a public library situated in Liangjiashan, an ancient village within China's Zhejiang Province. This 1,679-square-foot building, commissioned by Hongfu Tourism Group Co., Ltd., was designed by Hangzhou-based Shulin Architectural Design. Located on a triangular site near the village square, it stands adjacent to preserved rammed-earth Chinese courtyard houses, blending modern architecture with traditional surroundings. The library's design incorporates steel and wood for its main structure, featuring materials like pine, terrazzo, and clear "sun panels" that allow natural light to permeate the interior. A distinctive architectural feature is its elevation on ten columns, a design choice reminiscent of rural homes in Southeast Asia built to withstand floods. This elevation creates a sheltered, open-air patio on the ground level beneath the library, complete with a small pond. The lead architect, Liu Dongying, notes that this patio setting is designed to interact dynamically with natural elements such as sunlight, rain, and breeze, fostering a harmonious coexistence between people, space, and nature. The elevated position of the library also aligns its floor level with an adjacent children's playground. This thoughtful integration allows patrons inside the library to maintain visual contact with children playing outdoors through large picture windows, promoting a sense of community and shared space. Access to the library's interior is provided by an outdoor staircase leading from the ground level. Inside, the space is organized with various reading areas, extensive bookshelves, and a 3.3-foot-wide corridor for browsing. An additional staircase grants access to a more private reading area. The facade of the library is covered with special ribbed, translucent panels, which are manufactured locally within the village. These panels serve multiple functions: they offer muted views of the surrounding mountainous landscape, while simultaneously diffusing and softening the incoming sunlight, thus creating a calm and conducive reading environment. The 9996m2 multipurpose hall, situated in the Pudong district, is capable of hosting 1200 spectators and is inserted into a building originally designed by Arata Isozaki & Associates. The design emphasizes flexibility and cultural homage through its interior elements and configurable stage. A key feature of the auditorium is its flexible stage, comprising ten lifting platforms. This innovative design allows the stage to be raised to create one large floor area or to be converted into four distinct configurations, catering to various performance needs and event types. These lane houses, known as 'lilongs', were a common residential style in early 20th-century Shanghai, and while historically significant, many suffer from a lack of natural light due to their dense urban placement. Instead of undertaking a disruptive overhaul, the architects opted for a “discreet surgical approach.” Their main intervention involved carving out a narrow lightwell, which they named 'House With A Tiny Patio,' in the space between the two existing wings of the property. This vertical glass shaft extends from the first floor upwards to a rooflight, effectively channelling daylight into the previously light-starved rooms. The design not only serves to illuminate the interiors but also creates a visual connection between the different levels of the house, which are set at half-story increments. This architectural solution provides a sense of openness and vertical integration within the compact dwelling. To further enhance the connectivity and functionality of the space, a short bridge was installed, traversing the lightwell at the first-floor level. This addition re-establishes a link between a formerly isolated bedroom and the main living areas, fostering a more cohesive and interactive living environment. The architects highlighted that this project blends elements of Southern Chinese vernacular dwelling with a modern architectural language, emphasizing the celebration of air and light while enriching the domestic spatial experience through the interweaving of split floors. In terms of interior finishes and materials, the design prioritizes a calm and relaxed atmosphere.
