Minarc's prefabricated mnmMOD wall panels could revolutionize the way we build
Minarc, a Santa Monica-based design studio, developed the mnmMOD prefabrication system as a response to the need for innovative and energy-efficient solutions in constructing low-cost housing. The system aims to address issues related to cheap and poorly constructed homes by offering a high-performance alternative. The core component of the mnmMOD system is a Structural Insulated Panel (SIP), which has been re-engineered by Minarc. This mnmMOD SIP is structured like an 'ice-cream sandwich,' featuring recycled-steel framing encased by Gypsum board on the interior and a waterproof exterior membrane. The space within is filled with airtight expanded polystyrene insulation, which also integrates all necessary mechanical and electrical components.
This design significantly improves thermal performance by replacing traditional insulation with airtight thermal breaks. This enhancement reduces both heat loss and heat gain, leading to homes with a tighter building envelope and, consequently, lower carbon footprints. Beyond its energy efficiency, the mnmMOD panels are notable for their environmental sustainability. They contain a high percentage of recycled materials and are designed for easy disassembly and reuse at the end of their lifespan, promoting a circular economy approach to building materials.
The construction process using mnmMOD panels is streamlined and efficient. The panels are conveniently flat-packed for transport, which simplifies logistics. Once on site, they can be assembled with minimal tools, primarily a screw gun, by a small team—often as few as two workers—in a remarkably short period, sometimes as little as eight hours. This fuss-free shipping and rapid construction make mnmMOD an attractive option for various building projects.
Given its affordability, ease of use, and high performance, mnmMOD has gained considerable attention across the industry. The panels have been utilized in a diverse range of projects, including luxury residences, educational facilities, Habitat for Humanity dwellings, and even the personal homes of notable architects. The versatility and efficiency of the system are demonstrated in various applications, such as the Superb-A House in Venice Beach, which is a net-zero modular prefabricated home, and the Ion Hotel in Iceland, which incorporates mnmMOD panels into its innovative design. The system’s ability to create timeless, high-performance, and net-zero structures positions it as a significant advancement in modern construction.
