How Two Rhode Island Artists Made a Home in This 19th Century Voting Hall

Lindy McDonough and Conor MacKean, co-founders of Lindquist Object, transformed a historic 1886 former voting hall in Pawtucket, Rhode Island, into their unique family home. The building, known as the Fifth Ward Wardroom and listed on the National Register of Historic Places, has a rich past, having served as a polling place, a school, and an American Legion post, and has housed generations of Rhode Island School of Design (RISD) professors. McDonough, a RISD alumna herself, and MacKean embraced the building's 140-year history when they purchased it a decade ago. The artists inherited a space previously used as a printmaking studio, which they decided to adapt for residential living rather than their own artistic practices. To guide the renovation, they collaborated with RISD alumni friends, architect Anastasia Laurenzi and Michael Larsen of Oblique Studio. Their approach focused on utilizing humble materials, embracing wabi-sabi principles, and preserving the building's original character while making it more functional for modern life. Despite significant changes, including the addition of a kitchen, a lofted bedroom, a powder room, a laundry area, and a full bathroom, the unique quirks and historical essence of the structure were carefully maintained. A key design element was the integration of elements that appear historically accurate. For instance, the front doors, sourced from a Rhode Island factory and dating back to the 1880s, seamlessly blend with the building's age, often mistaken for original features. The heart pine floors, though original, were updated with a water-based finish and a light oil coat to ensure durability for their family, including their dog Hugo and toddler Ulla. The kitchen, designed with timber framing and traditional Japanese joinery, features a salvaged original soapstone sink, and MacKean personally crafted the cabinets from marine-grade plywood, selecting utilitarian yet beautiful pines. Larsen later added dovetails to address any cracks, further enhancing the wabi-sabi aesthetic. McDonough’s vision for an M.C. Escher-esque staircase leads to the lofted bedroom above the kitchen. This metal structure, welded by Larsen, provides both strength and durability. The loft's pine flooring serves a dual purpose, acting as the ceiling for the kitchen below. Another bedroom, accessed through an original arched doorway, was divided to create a full bathroom featuring a freestanding tub and a separate shower. The bathroom's vintage milky gray tiles were serendipitously acquired from a friend's mother's bar, and Larsen ingeniously designed a brass piece to connect the tile with the wood floor, bridging the material gap. This creative solution reflects the couple’s philosophy of embracing natural wear and patinas, a sentiment also evident in their leather goods business, Lindquist Object. The home stands as a testament to their dedication to preserving history while creating a lived-in, evolving space that continues to acquire new stories and character, much like their handcrafted products. #HomeTour #HistoricRenovation #ArtistHome #RhodeIslandDesign #AdaptiveReuse #WabiSabi #DIYHome #ArtisanCraftsmanship #InteriorDesign #HomeTour #HistoricRenovation #ArtistHome #RhodeIslandDesign #AdaptiveReuse #WabiSabi #DIYHome #ArtisanCraftsmanship #InteriorDesign
