New Zillow Research Says These Paint Colors Can Help Sell Your Home
New research from Zillow indicates that certain paint colors can significantly influence a home's sale price, challenging traditional preferences for neutral tones. The study, released in June 2025, highlights that deep, moody hues such as olive green, navy blue, and charcoal gray are not only making a style statement but are also boosting home values. Specifically, homes featuring olive green kitchens could see an increase of $1,597 in sale price, while a navy blue bedroom might command an additional $1,815 above the expected value, demonstrating a tangible return on investment for homeowners. This suggests that contemporary, saturated colors are now preferred by buyers over conventional eggshell white and greige.
According to Amanda Pendleton, Zillow’s home trends expert, buyers perceive olive green and navy blue as contemporary colors, which positively impacts their overall impression of a home. These nature-inspired colors are associated with feelings of serenity and tranquility. Zillow's analysis, which involved surveying over 4,200 recent and prospective buyers, underscores the growing popularity of 'organic modernism' – a design trend characterized by earth tones, natural textures, and a sense of grounded luxury. This trend, initially prevalent in high-end new constructions, has now permeated mainstream buyer preferences, indicating a shift in aesthetic desires.
While saturated tones can add value in specific areas, local real estate agents like Christie Cannon at Keller Williams in Dallas-Fort Worth note that common staging practices for shared living spaces still favor warm and neutral palettes. However, buyers, particularly those relocating from coastal regions, increasingly expect a polished, move-in-ready aesthetic, including curated yet neutral finishes, wide-plank oak floors, and brass accents, as observed by Dallas-based designer Jean Liu. This suggests a nuanced approach where bold colors are strategically used to maximize appeal and value.
Further findings from the study reveal specific color impacts across different rooms. Charcoal gray continues to be the top-performing color for living rooms, potentially increasing the sale price by $2,593. For bathrooms, a mid-tone brown, akin to Pantone’s 2025 Color of the Year, received the highest favorable ratings. Conversely, certain colors can negatively affect a home's value. A daisy yellow kitchen or living room could lead buyers to offer nearly $4,000 less, while a fire hydrant red living room or bedroom might decrease the sale price by up to $1,987. The research also challenges the long-held belief that white interiors help buyers visualize potential, indicating that bolder, saturated hues aligning with current design-forward aesthetics are more effective in influencing both emotional connection and financial offers. This highlights a definitive shift in buyer preferences towards more dramatic and contemporary color schemes.
