The Paint Colors That Might Be Making—Or Breaking—Your Home's Value, According To Zillow

When preparing a home for sale, common practices include tidying up spaces, undertaking home improvements, and depersonalizing the environment by removing items like family photographs to broaden its appeal. While a fresh coat of paint is a standard recommendation, new research from Zillow indicates that the specific color choices can significantly influence the final sale price of a home. A report based on a survey of 4,200 recent and prospective home buyers across the country highlights which paint colors can either boost or diminish a home's value. Certain paint colors have been identified as value-boosting for 2025. Dark olive green, navy blue, and dark gray are officially recognized for their positive impact on home sale prices. Specifically, homes featuring an olive green kitchen could see an increase of $1,597 in buyer willingness to pay. A navy blue bedroom might elevate a home's sale price by $1,815, and a dark gray living room could lead to an additional $2,593. Amanda Pendleton, Zillow's home trends expert, explains that buyers perceive olive green and navy blue as contemporary colors, which can positively influence their overall impression of the home. These shades of blue and green are also associated with organic modernism, an aesthetic that incorporates sustainable materials and evokes feelings of serenity and tranquility. This research also reveals a shift in buyer preferences, with darker shades of green, blue, and gray outperforming traditional recommendations of white and lighter hues such as sage green and pale sky blue. The report suggests that today's buyers are increasingly drawn to bold, personalized colors that transform a home into a sanctuary. Conversely, some paint colors can detract from a home's value, potentially costing sellers thousands of dollars. The report strongly advises against using yellow and red tones if the goal is to maximize the sale price. Buyers indicated a willingness to pay significantly less for homes with a daisy yellow kitchen, specifically $3,915 less, and a daisy yellow living room, with a reduction of $3,891. Similarly, a fire hydrant red living room could decrease a home's value by $1,820, and a red bedroom could lead to a reduction of $1,987. These findings underscore the importance of strategic color selection in home staging and preparation for sale, as certain hues can act as powerful determinants of perceived value in the real estate market. #HomeValue #PaintColors #ZillowReport #HomeSellingTips #InteriorDesign #ColorTrends #RealEstate #HomeStaging #HomeValue #PaintColors #ZillowReport #HomeSellingTips #InteriorDesign #ColorTrends #RealEstate #HomeStaging
