This Sophisticated Former DuPont Estate Embraces the Blues
The article highlights the interior design transformation of a four-bedroom home in Crooked Billet, a 55-and-over community within Greenville's Chateaux Country, formerly a DuPont estate. Interior designer Megan Gorelick spearheaded the project for a Pennsylvania couple looking to downsize. Gorelick, known for her use of blue hues in coastal designs, adopted a signature blue and champagne color scheme throughout the residence to create a sense of serenity and cohesion. This approach allowed for a diverse range of patterns within the chosen palette, seen in varied pillows featuring plush fringe and Greek key designs.
A key element of Gorelick’s design philosophy for this project was to thread the dominant color throughout the home, ensuring a unified aesthetic. Several ceilings were painted a pale blue to metaphorically bring the sky indoors, complementing the natural setting visible from the windows. The designer emphasized that all shades of blue can harmonize, pairing them with a neutral champagne. Metallic accents, primarily silver, were incorporated to add a touch of glamour, reflecting the client’s sophisticated taste.
The living room serves as a prime example of this color scheme, featuring velvet seating, including champagne-colored sofas, a pale blue tufted ottoman, and cyan stools with fringe. Custom built-in bookcases were added, and the fireplace surround was lined with bronzed mirrored tile. The stools are adorned with heavily jeweled trim, further enhancing the glamorous feel. Kate Spade lighting sconces, reminiscent of earrings, were chosen to echo this luxurious theme.
Beyond aesthetics, the design also prioritized practicality. The clients requested two equally luxurious premier bedroom suites: one on the upper floor for immediate use and another on the lower floor, anticipating future accessibility needs. Both suites were meticulously designed to offer comfort and elegance. The upstairs premier bathroom features a distinctive shower design, incorporating a framed panel of contrasting, patterned tile by Young Huh for Akdo, set against a blue-gray glass background tile from Lunada Bay, creating a 'window-of-tile' effect. Despite its cost, the tile was maximized to create a significant visual impact.
The upstairs bedroom is characterized by angled walls wrapped in grass cloth and a customized, elaborate headboard from Vanguard Furniture. This headboard features a silvered wooden frame, a vertically channeled blue velvet headrest, and silver nail heads, adding 'extra bling.' The bedding throughout the home is custom-designed, with Gorelick's team instructing clients on how to maintain a luxurious hotel-like appearance in their own bedrooms, reinforcing the goal of creating sophisticated and serene living spaces.
