Timeless Coastal Design: Jenni Kayne's Manhattan Beach Home
Jenni Kayne Interiors undertook the task of converting a new, builder-grade home in Manhattan Beach into a personalized sanctuary for Kristin Graziani, President of Stem, and her husband, Grant Willhite, a consulting partner. The design inspiration drew from the couple's travels to Greece and the sophisticated, understated luxury of Aman resorts. The primary objective was to infuse warmth, intentionality, and refined simplicity into the existing architectural framework.
Linnea Schooley, Interior Design Director at Jenni Kayne, emphasized creating a natural aesthetic suitable for the seaside environment without overtly adopting a "beachy" theme. The design adheres to Jenni Kayne’s characteristic Golden State style, utilizing a consistent and calming color palette complemented by natural materials. Throughout the home, white oak flooring, custom casework, and paneling are prominent features, further enhanced by Roman Clay walls and distinctive sculptural lighting elements.
A notable aspect of the design is the entry, which features an oversized glass door designed to make a strong first impression. This minimal space is anchored by an Apparatus Lariat fixture, an antique bench, and a custom art piece developed in collaboration with Sam Kupiec, all contributing to the home’s overall serene and intentional atmosphere. The great room, forming the central hub of the residence, is equipped with wall-to-wall steel and glass doors that open directly onto the backyard. This design choice maximizes natural light and airflow, facilitating an indoor-outdoor living experience ideal for entertaining or quiet relaxation, aligning with the clients' lifestyle.
In the kitchen and adjacent dining area, white oak cabinetry is paired with limestone countertops, and an Italian travertine dining table introduces sculptural warmth. Schooley highlights that these material selections are chosen for their ability to develop a rich patina over time, enhancing the home's character. The project required significant design adjustments, as Jenni Kayne Interiors became involved mid-construction. These pivots were necessary to ensure that every detail was carefully considered and executed, occasionally necessitating temporary halts in construction to refine design elements.
After approximately three years of work, the completed home embodies a contemporary retreat infused with a distinct California essence. Schooley expressed satisfaction with the final outcome, noting the clients' excitement during the reveal and envisioning their future experiences in a home designed to complement the Manhattan Beach environment.
