This Sea Island Home Was Inspired by a Brass Handbag, Seashells, and a Vintage Book About 'Jaws'
Designer Ellen Kavanaugh collaborated with a childhood friend to create a unique home on Sea Island, Georgia, drawing inspiration from personal memories and eclectic elements. Kavanaugh, who grew up in Jacksonville, Florida, shared a similar marsh-front upbringing with her client, making the Sea Island location particularly nostalgic and serene for her. The client, who had long dreamt of a beach house, found a suitable property built in 1987 by prominent architect Robert Raley, known for his work on Georgia’s Golden Coast.
The existing house possessed strong architectural bones but required modernization to accommodate an active family of five who frequently entertains. The renovation involved a complete overhaul of the kitchen, a contemporary refresh of the bathrooms, and, most significantly, the addition of a spacious covered loggia. This outdoor living space was designed to maximize enjoyment of the marsh views, seamlessly blending indoor and outdoor living areas with comfortable club chairs.
The interior design process was organic, stemming from a creative collaboration with the client. Kavanaugh discovered a 3D mood board on the client's dining table, featuring diverse lifestyle pieces such as a brass handbag, a collection of seashells, and a vintage book about the film 'Jaws.' These seemingly disparate items provided an immediate vision for the home's aesthetic: a blend of '70s and '80s glam with a natural beach house feel, incorporating casual materials and textures.
Kavanaugh and project manager Madison Way implemented this vision by embracing Sea Island's Lowcountry color palette, using earthy greens, rusty pinks, natural taupes, and golden hues. These colors complemented the home's extensive use of cypress wood. The designers integrated a mix of vintage and custom furniture and decor to evoke a sense of retro glamour, reminiscent of a well-collected beachfront home in Bermuda or the Bahamas. The aim was to create a space that felt as though it had been lovingly curated by generations of the family.
A prime example of this fusion is the kitchen, which features cabinetry painted in a soft, barely-there blush, beechwood counter stools, and brass accents. A showstopping iridescent backsplash from Paris Ceramics further unites retro and rugged elements. Throughout the rest of the home, palm print and grasscloth wallcoverings immerse the interiors in the surrounding environment. Each room is adorned with coastal-inspired art, decor, and greenery, reinforcing the connection to its natural setting. Kavanaugh highlighted the personal satisfaction of rekindling a significant friendship and working in an environment that held deep personal meaning, emphasizing the unique blend of childhood memories, '70s glam, and a casual Lowcountry feel that defines the home.
