These chic coastal interiors were inspired by the elegance of America's beloved former first lady, Jackie Kennedy
This blog post explores a Vancouver oceanfront home whose interior design draws inspiration from the timeless elegance of Jackie Kennedy Onassis. The design, executed by Kelly Deck, blends modern and traditional styles, reflecting Kennedy's sophisticated aesthetic, particularly her look during sailing trips. Key influences include design trips to The Hamptons and observations of vintage sailing craft.
The project began when the homeowners, needing to accommodate their growing family, tasked Kelly Deck with seamlessly integrating their original home with a newly acquired adjacent lot. This expansion resulted in a residence featuring seven bedrooms and eight bathrooms. The home's prime location near the Royal Vancouver Yacht Club was a significant factor in shaping the design. The design philosophy incorporates elements reminiscent of wood sailboats, such as sun-kissed wood, detailed fastenings, and the colors of rope, sail, and sea. These elements informed the home's color scheme and contributed to its relaxed coastal ambiance. Historical images of Jackie Kennedy at sea or by the seaside further guided the team in creating a chic and restrained style.
The kitchen exemplifies this coastal theme with a palette of blue, white, navy, gold, and natural wood, inspired by the ocean views. A central island matches the specific blue shade of the Le Cornue range. The eat-in kitchen features a gallery wall displaying vintage china in soft blue hues, adding character. Furnishings like a baker's table from Arcadia Antiques and chairs from Coolican & Company enhance the blend of traditional and modern elements. The designer, Kelly Deck, emphasizes the challenge and opportunity of adapting the home to the family's evolving needs over four years, which involved changes in room configurations and flexible design approaches.
The home incorporates a broad selection of finishes across its many contained spaces, connected by archways and glazed oak doors, allowing for unique experiences in each room. The kitchen's transitional style combines diverse pieces and finishes, creating a relaxed, timeless appearance, including historically inspired Urban Electric light fixtures, Vicostone countertops, a vintage-style rug from Tibetano, and a Walker Zanger backsplash. The dining room features more contemporary influences, with Visual Comfort chandeliers providing a traditional hint. The table is from Avenue Road, chairs from Villa & House, and the painting by David Guenter. Neutral textured wallpaper by Holly Hunt completes the space.
Hallway areas are designed to highlight the home's deep verandas and ocean views, with raised panels and shiplap detailing reinforcing the nautical narrative. The living room is characterized by quiet elegance, with gauze drapery for ample light and whitewashed wide plank white oak flooring. Chandeliers are by Urban Electric, a fireplace by Jamb, and a lamp by Visual Comfort. Custom sofas by Kelly Deck Design, along with armchairs by Lee Industries and Baker furniture, furnish the space. The home office features smart navy millwork, a carved rope motif, navy grasscloth walls, and cognac leather accents, creating a distinct nautical feel. Furnishings include a Herman Miller desk chair, custom sofa and ottoman by Kelly Deck Design, and a rug by East India Carpets. A Phillip Jeffries ceiling wallpaper and a Hector Finch light further enhance the room's character.
The principal bedroom is light, bright, and layered, with a color scheme of white, linen, and various blue hues, complemented by stunning ocean views. Darker blue furnishings echo the ocean, while a very pale blue ceiling (Sherwin Williams' Misty) subtly references the sky. A chandelier from Currey & Company adds to the room's sophistication. Kids' rooms feature an under-ocean theme with matching wallpaper and draperies sourced from Paris, maintaining the home's harmonious color scheme while adding individuality. One of the eight bathrooms, the ensuite to the primary bedroom, presents a neutral scheme of white with gold highlights, characterized by rich textures and layers that evoke Jackie Kennedy's style. Key details include pendant lights by Hudson Valley Lighting, faucets by House of Rohl, tiles by Ann Sacks, and a tub by Victoria & Albert.
The outdoor spaces, including verandas surrounding three sides of the home, provide access to ocean views. The exterior color scheme, developed in collaboration with architect Eric Stine and landscape architect Paul Sangha, is light and romantic, featuring parchment-colored cedar shake, white trim, a cedar shake roof, copper pipes, and buff-colored natural stone patios. Quality outdoor furniture and soft-palette container plantings complete the look. The overall design aim was to create a home that feels lighthearted, youthful, and airy, while also possessing the presence and substance of a historical residence that has stood for generations.
