This Sea Island Home Was Inspired by a Brass Handbag, Seashells, and a Vintage Book About 'Jaws'

The article details the design process and aesthetic of a Sea Island home, renovated by designer Ellen Kavanaugh for a childhood friend. Kavanaugh and the client, who grew up together in Jacksonville, Florida, sought to create a home that captured their shared nostalgic memories of coastal life while incorporating modern comforts and a unique blend of retro glamour. The project began with the client discovering a house on Sea Island, Georgia, which resonated with the familiar terrain, climate, and color palette of their childhood home. The house, originally built in 1987 by architect Robert Raley, possessed strong foundational elements but required significant updates to accommodate a contemporary family of five who frequently entertains. Key structural changes included gutting the kitchen, refreshing the bathrooms, and adding a spacious covered loggia to enhance engagement with the marsh views. Kavanaugh's design inspiration stemmed from an unconventional 'mood board' created by the client, which included a brass handbag, a collection of seashells, and a vintage book about the movie 'Jaws.' This eclectic mix informed the desired aesthetic: a fusion of 1970s and 1980s glam with a natural, casual beach house feel, utilizing various materials and textures. The design team, including project manager Madison Way, drew upon the Lowcountry's natural color palette, incorporating earthy greens, rusty pinks, natural taupes, and golden hues, which harmonized with the home's existing cypress wood. The interior features a deliberate blend of vintage and custom-made pieces, aiming for a collected-over-time appearance, reminiscent of well-established beachfront homes in places like Bermuda or the Bahamas. The kitchen exemplifies this approach, with cabinets painted in a soft blush, beechwood counter stools, brass accents, and an iridescent backsplash from Paris Ceramics that merges retro and rugged elements. Throughout the home, palm print and grasscloth wallcoverings, coastal-inspired art, decor, and greenery further accentuate the connection to the surrounding environment. Specific rooms highlight this design philosophy: the living room mixes vintage accent chairs with custom seating; the family room features a Coup Studio sofa and vintage chairs upholstered in Fermoie's Shell Grotto fabric; a Phillip Jeffries geometric wallpaper adds retro flair to the bar area; and the primary bedroom showcases feminine vintage finds. The son's bedroom uses family heirloom beds alongside Cole & Son palm print wallpaper, while an outdoor cabana provides a celebratory poolside experience. The project was particularly meaningful for Kavanaugh, allowing her to reconnect with a childhood friend and work in a cherished setting, blending personal history with design expertise to create a soulful and elegant home that reflects its coastal locale and the client's unique vision. #HomeDesign #CoastalLiving #RetroGlamour #InteriorDecoration #SeaIsland #EllenKavanaugh #LowcountryStyle #VintageDesign #HomeDesign #CoastalLiving #RetroGlamour #InteriorDecoration #SeaIsland #EllenKavanaugh #LowcountryStyle #VintageDesign
