Cleaning fans warned of the 4 dangerous ‘hacks’ totally ruining their homes - and the products to steer clear of too
Many popular cleaning hacks circulating on TikTok are actually causing significant damage to various types of household flooring, according to a flooring expert. Declan Christie, Founder & Flooring Specialist at Luxury Flooring & Furnishings, advises against several commonly adopted practices and products, offering safer alternatives to maintain floor integrity. The main culprits identified include the use of Scrub Daddies, washing tablets or powdered detergents, and boiling water for cleaning, each posing unique risks to different flooring materials.
Scrub Daddies, while effective for some surfaces, are not recommended for floors. Christie explains that while granite can withstand rough pressure, most other flooring types, such as wooden, laminate, and vinyl, are susceptible to damage from abrasive scrubbers. Wooden floors, often treated with a protective layer, can have this coating stripped away, exposing the raw material to wear. Vinyl, being a softer plastic, can experience rips, holes, and fading of color or design over time. Instead of Scrub Daddies, the expert suggests using gentler tools like mops or sponges. Mops are particularly recommended for engineered and solid wood flooring due to their need for extra care, while sponges are suitable for vinyl and laminate, which can handle more water absorption.
Another significant issue arises from the use of washing tablets or powdered detergents. Many TikTok users advocate for these products in homemade cleaning solutions, but Christie strongly advises against this practice. These detergents are formulated for high-heat dissolution and are designed to be diluted in large volumes of water, such as in washing machines or dishwashers. When used on floors, typically in much smaller volumes of water, their concentration becomes too high. This can prevent full dissolution, leading to chemical stains, especially on wooden flooring. Furthermore, undissolved particles and hard elements like salt found in these detergents can scratch the floor surface. The chemical composition can also be particularly harmful to the protective treatments on engineered woods like herringbone or parquet. As a safer alternative, Christie recommends a natural cleaning solution comprising water, white vinegar (a natural dirt stripper), rubbing alcohol (for disinfection), and essential oils for fragrance.
Finally, the use of boiling water for cleaning floors, often based on the misconception that 'the hotter the better' for disinfection, is a dangerous practice. Boiling water can cause severe damage to almost all flooring types. Solid wood flooring is especially vulnerable to heat, which can cause the wood to expand, leading to cracking and unevenness in the floorboards. Laminate and engineered wood flooring can suffer from corrosion. For vinyl, boiling water can melt the plastic, resulting in a tacky texture. The expert also notes that the steam generated by hot water can be damaging to wood. Therefore, steam cleaners are generally only advised for vinyl floors. After applying a cleaning solution, it is recommended to use lukewarm water for a final wipe-over to absorb any remaining solution, making the surface safe for children and pets.
Adhering to these recommendations can help homeowners protect their flooring from unnecessary damage and extend its lifespan, avoiding costly repairs or replacements, and ensuring a clean and well-maintained home environment without relying on potentially harmful trends.
