Home cinema install: XXL entertainment
This article details the creation of an exceptionally large and luxurious home cinema, part of a basement conversion in a high-end London residence. The project, undertaken by installer AONYX, transformed a concrete shell into a sophisticated entertainment space. The design brief was to create an 'amazing cinema' that was both reliable and user-friendly, leading to the integration of a Control4 automation system for seamless operation of various components including lighting and entertainment systems. The cinema boasts 18 seats arranged in three rows, a 4.1-meter-wide projection screen, and a 7.4.4 speaker system with in-ceiling models featuring RAL colour-matched painted grilles to ensure a discreet installation. The projector is housed in a custom-built enclosure, emphasizing the cost-no-object approach to the design.
The technical specifications of the home cinema are impressive, featuring high-end hardware. The visual experience is delivered by a Barco Balder projector, a laser-based model capable of 7,000 Lumens output, making it suitable for a large screen and HDR content. The audio system comprises Triad on-wall, in-wall, and in-ceiling speakers from its Platinum, Silver, and Gold series, complemented by Arcam amplification and processing. Subwoofers include Triad InRoom Platinum Subs and Sonance R12SUBs, powered by dedicated amplifiers. The source components are equally high-end, featuring a 12TB Kaleidescape 4K movie player for extensive content storage, an Apple TV streamer, and a Panasonic DP-UB9000 UHD Blu-ray player. The entire setup is managed by a Control4 EA-5 system processor with a wall-mounted touchscreen and remote.
Acoustic treatments and in-wall speakers are concealed behind stretched fabric walls, contributing to the clean aesthetic, while a false wall at the front accommodates the screen, LCR speakers, and two subwoofers. Professional-grade wireless networking was installed to provide sufficient bandwidth for both the AV system and multiple guests. The home cinema is part of a larger entertainment complex that includes an adjacent billiards room and a ten-pin bowling alley, all integrated into the Control4 automation system. This integration ensures a cohesive and luxurious living experience within the property.
Richard Reid, managing director of AONYX, highlighted the trend in London's residential real estate market towards customized living experiences, with such cinematic amenities making a significant statement. The project underscores the importance of a well-integrated system that is not only technologically advanced but also intuitive to use. The meticulous attention to detail, from hidden hardware to specialized acoustic treatments, reflects a commitment to creating an immersive and high-performance home entertainment environment. The collaboration between the installer and the client's vision resulted in a truly bespoke and state-of-the-art home cinema installation designed for ultimate luxury and ease of use.
