Home cinema install: Making movie Majik
This article details a home cinema installation project undertaken by UK company Majik House. The project's objective was to transform a former games room into a sophisticated home cinema and bar area within a family residence. The client's requirements focused on a system that offered both high aesthetic appeal and superior performance, coupled with user-friendly operation. The chosen system configuration is a 7.2.2 Dolby Atmos setup, integrating hardware from KEF, Arcam, and JVC.
Neil Taylor, the installer, highlighted the brief's emphasis on creating a distinct look and feel for the cinema space, separate from the rest of the home. The design incorporated several custom elements, including two coffered Starscape ceilings, a curved arrangement of cinema seats, and an elevated seating area adjacent to a bespoke bar. Feature LED lighting was also a key component of the design. To manage natural light, motorized blackout blinds were installed on windows along the rear wall. A dedicated in-wall recess was constructed to discreetly house a slide-out equipment rack, ensuring a clean and uncluttered appearance.
For seamless operation, a Control4 automation system was implemented, providing centralized control over various aspects of the cinema. The speaker system comprises KEF Ci3160RL-THX in-wall speakers, with three units positioned behind the screen for the front channels. Six KEF Ci200RR-THX in-ceiling speakers were installed, with the front two specifically designated for Dolby Atmos overhead effects. Audio fine-tuning, including precise bass management for the dual Velodyne subwoofers, was achieved through Dirac Live room calibration, facilitated by an Arcam AVR550 AV receiver. This calibration process ensures optimal sound reproduction tailored to the specific acoustics of the room.
The content sources for the cinema include a Sky Q PVR for live television and recorded programs, an Apple TV 4K box for streaming services, and an Arcam Blu-ray player for physical media. The generous dimensions of the room allowed for a spacious layout, accommodating a curved front row of six Palladio recliners, complemented by additional seating around the custom-designed bar area. The lighting system features bias lighting around the fixed-frame projector screen, enhancing visual comfort and perceived contrast. A twin star ceiling design, separated by a ceiling coffer that also integrates downlighters, contributes to the immersive ambiance of the space. The installation successfully repurposed the former games room, creating a luxurious and functional home entertainment environment for the family.
Key components of the installation include a JVC DLA-X5500 projector, a 3m-wide fixed-frame projector screen with acoustic fabric, and an Arcam FMJ P429 power amplifier. The audio setup is completed by two Velodyne SPL-1200 Ultra subwoofers. QMotion Zigbee-controlled blackout blinds provide automated light control. A Middle Atlantic slide-out kit rack manages equipment, and Palladio seating ensures comfort. Hollianna Interiors custom-designed the bar, adding to the unique character of the cinema.
