Home cinema install: Underground retreat
This article details an award-winning subterranean home cinema installation designed and executed by FAB Audio Visual, an St Albans-based installer. The project, which earned a CEDIA Award for Best Home Cinema under £40,000, involved converting a pre-wired basement room into a sophisticated home cinema that could also function as a family living area. The client had tight deadlines, requiring decisions on AV requirements and electrical point positioning within 48 hours of purchasing the property.
A key design element for maintaining an uncluttered aesthetic was the construction of a false wall to conceal the three front speakers. Video projection is handled by a Digital Projection iVision30 projector, ceiling-mounted behind the seating area. This particular projector was selected for its high light output of up to 3100 ANSI lumens, which delivers high-quality images on the large screen, as well as its compact size and near-silent operation, eliminating the need for a separate housing cabinet. The entire room's functionality is managed through a Phillips Pronto TSU-9600 touchscreen remote, a Crestron CP2E processor, and a custom software module developed by FAB AV for seamless interface between the two systems.
All primary equipment is discreetly housed within a full-height 19-inch rack located in a mechanically-ventilated cupboard at the rear of the room, further contributing to the spacious feel. The room's dual purpose for entertainment is supported by light, neutral wall tones that enhance the perception of space. The Lutron lighting system, integrated into the whole-house lighting, includes low-level floor washers beneath the screen for added visual impact. The transformation from living room to home cinema is automated: selecting a movie on the controller triggers the amplification and source equipment to power up, and the lights to dim, instantly creating an immersive viewing environment.
The installation features a comprehensive kit list, including a Screen Excellence 110-inch fixed 16:9 acoustically transparent projection screen, an Onkyo PR-SC5507 AV processor, an Onkyo BD-SP807 Blu-ray player, two Sky HD receivers, and a Nintendo Wii games console. Audio components comprise Genelec AIW26 active speakers for the front, AIW25 active speakers for the surrounds, and a Genelec HTS4B active subwoofer. The Genelec subwoofer, despite its compact size, boasts a frequency range of 18-120Hz and offers adjustable controls for sensitivity, bass roll-off, and crossover phase-matching to optimize its performance within the room's acoustics. The in-wall placement of the Genelec active speakers further enhances the stealth design of the audio system, ensuring that powerful sound is heard but not seen.
The control system incorporates a Kramer Sierra Pro video switcher, which is part of a broader house-wide video distribution network, allowing multiple sources in the equipment rack to be routed to the cinema. The mood lighting system, controlled by the main house system, facilitates the transition of the room from a day-to-day living space to a dedicated home cinema. This project exemplifies a successful integration of high-performance audio-visual technology with thoughtful interior design, creating a versatile and sophisticated entertainment space.
