This 6,000-square-foot biophilic home in Kerala is naturally climate controlled
In the coastal town of Kadirur, Kerala, AD100 architects Reny Lijo and Lijo Jos have designed 'The Stoic Wall Residence', a 6,188-square-foot biophilic home that naturally controls its internal climate. The design addresses Kerala's hot, humid conditions and heavy rainfall by integrating natural elements and sustainable principles, providing a comfortable living environment for its occupants.
The architects emphasize biophilia not just as a design trend involving plants, but as a core philosophy where the structure engages in a harmonious dialogue with its natural surroundings. The home's strategic placement on an irregularly shaped, gently sloping site minimizes solar heat gain by aligning its primary section along the east-west axis, favoring the north.
A distinctive feature of the residence is its curved roof, designed to leverage the principles of a hot air balloon for natural climate control. Unlike conventional flat roofs that absorb heat, this curved structure allows hot, dense air to rise and escape through vertical ventilators in each room. Glazed openings above laterite walls enhance openness and create the illusion of a levitating roof, contributing to cooler indoor temperatures.
The home spans two floors, with the ground floor organized into three distinct levels. The highest level accommodates the car porch and formal living room, followed by six steps leading to the dining room, kitchen, and workspace. The three bedrooms are situated on the lowest part of the property. An open landscaped courtyard and a central paved area separate the formal living space and its outdoor seating from the main structure, connected by an internal ramp that navigates the site's varying elevations.
Each bedroom features an adjoining bathroom and opens into a tropical courtyard, drawing in southwesterly winds and the sounds of monsoon rains. This design fosters a strong connection with nature. The upper floor houses the master bedroom, bathroom, and entertainment area, encircled by a slatted terracotta screen balcony that offers protection from rain while allowing ample natural light throughout the year.
The home's aesthetic is characterized by clean linear designs that highlight the numerous courtyards, giving the structure a sense of lightness and seamless integration with the environment. The interior design features simple furniture and décor, complemented by fine art photography by the homeowner's brother. A natural material palette, including exposed laterite, terracotta, teak, stone pavers, and exposed concrete, adds warmth and regional character.
Plain Spaces and LIJO.RENY.architects collaborated on the landscaping, preserving existing flora and introducing native plants and trees to further ground the home in its natural setting. The design, while modern, maintains a regional soul, reflecting the unique topography of northern Kerala. The architects underscore the importance of patience and careful observation of nature in creating a home that ages gracefully and remains in harmony with its surroundings.
