Tangent Lamp Alters Mood With Each Interactive Human Touch
The Tangent Lamp, a creation by RELVĀOKELLERMANN through their experimental RK Lab, reimagines the conventional interaction with a lighting fixture. Unlike typical lamps that operate with a simple power switch, the Tangent Lamp introduces a playful and artistic approach to illumination through human interaction. Its core functionality revolves around three primary components: a magnetic sphere, a block of oxidized steel, and a light filament.
The innovative design utilizes a magnetic connection to activate the light. When the magnetic sphere makes contact with any part of the oxidized steel block, it creates a single point of electrical contact, allowing current to flow and illuminate the filament. This moment of contact is referred to as the 'tangent,' which also lends its name to the lamp. The light remains on as long as this magnetic connection is maintained. Conversely, the lamp powers off the instant the magnetic sphere detaches from the steel block.
This interactive mechanism transforms the user into an active participant in shaping the lamp's appearance and 'mood.' The user can place the magnetic sphere at various points on the steel block, thereby altering the lamp's posture and overall aesthetic. This direct engagement challenges traditional notions of how a lighting object should function, turning the act of switching on a light into a dynamic, interactive experience. RK Lab emphasizes that the Tangent Lamp investigates the relationship between experience, technology, and the fundamental purpose of light itself.
The design's intention is to highlight how a simple tangent connection can fulfill both functional requirements and offer a novel way for individuals to engage with an everyday object. By responding to human touch and allowing for continuous transformation through the placement of the magnetic sphere, the Tangent Lamp fosters a unique connection between the user and the illuminated environment. It demonstrates how subtle changes in interaction can lead to significant shifts in an object's perceived character and utility, making it more than just a source of light but a piece of interactive art.
