The Physiology of Taras Yoom’s Quirky Dif Lamp
The Dif Lamp, a unique floor lamp created by Bangkok-based designer Taras Yoom (born Taras Zheltyshev), draws its inspiration from the human physiological system, reflecting Yoom's background as a medical professional. The lamp's design features purple tubes, reminiscent of the body's vascular system, and light pink orbs that symbolize blood cells. This design approach stems from Yoom's early career experiences, where he worked concurrently in a laboratory and an architectural firm, leading him to explore the intersection of visible reality and the hidden biological processes within organisms. This fusion of medical and artistic perspectives eventually led to the creation of the Yoomoota art universe, a comprehensive body of work centered around human physiology.
Within the Yoomoota universe, the Dif Luminaire is conceptualized as being composed of 'terrestrial cells' dispatched to Earth by a character named Thymus. These cells are purposed with safeguarding the planet from 'infectious agents' such as Viroids and Bagds. The light pink cells, presented as both living and non-living objects, are housed in Thymus’s backpack and are intended to deter adversaries through their appearance. On Orginion, a planetary representation of the human body where biochemical and physiological processes are depicted, similar luminaires function as protective charms. They are activated during nighttime when infections threaten the cities, providing both physical protection and acting as a guiding light to combat irrational fears encountered by the inhabitants.
The broader Yoomoota universe serves as a metaphorical representation of our inner worlds, depicting a parallel existence complete with its own planets and inhabitants. This universe is a direct projection of human bodies and minds, wherein all global phenomena in reality are mirrored. Yoom conveys this intricate narrative through a diverse range of artistic mediums, including sculptures, collectible design pieces, paintings, mixed-media installations, storybooks, and NFTs. The Dif Lamp, therefore, is not merely a lighting fixture but a tangible manifestation of a larger, deeply conceptual art project that explores the intricate and often unseen processes of life through a creative lens.
