Curves and Color-Blocking Collide in One Far-Out Floating Shelf Display
This article details a creative DIY project for a child's bedroom, focusing on a unique floating shelf display designed to store and showcase Lego creations. The project, undertaken by DIYer Lindsey Joy for her sons' shared bedroom, was inspired by a desire to keep Lego builds visible and organized without clutter. The central feature of the display is a large circular mural painted on the wall, employing a color-blocking technique with two shades of blue: Clare’s Blue Ivy for the main wall and a slightly darker Deep Dive for the circle itself. This color scheme was chosen to introduce a sophisticated, lunar-inspired aesthetic to the room, moving away from a traditional toddler-like feel.
The process of creating the precise circular mural is outlined, involving a simple technique similar to using a giant protractor: a nail is hammered at the desired center, a string of the chosen radius is attached, and a pencil tied to the end is used to draw the perfect circle. After sketching, the border is painted with a small brush, and the interior is filled with a roller. The floating shelves themselves were either custom-built from plywood and pine or can be recreated using readily available options like IKEA’s Lack shelves. The critical aspect is ensuring the shelves fit perfectly within the painted circle’s diameter and are spaced evenly. Joy painted her shelves in the same Deep Dive color as the inner circle, allowing them to blend seamlessly with the mural.
The functionality of the display is highlighted by how the Lego structures are arranged. More intricate and cherished builds are placed on higher shelves, protecting them from accidental knocks, while the lowest shelf is equipped with baskets for additional toy storage, such as American Girl Doll accessories, leaving room for future acquisitions. To enhance the space-themed design, two plug-in globe sconces from World Market were installed on either side of the circular mural, eliminating the need for complex wiring.
The article also touches upon the importance of reinforcement for floating shelves, particularly in a child's room. Joy used 6-inch-long metal brackets to secure her shelves, a measure proven necessary when her son attempted to use them as a ladder. Fellow DIYer Molly Madfis, who created a similar mustard-toned circle mural, advises painting these metal brackets the same color as the wall to make them virtually invisible. The concept extends beyond kids' rooms, as exemplified by Laura Lane and Nic Rad, who incorporated a custom-built, ombré pink round shelf unit with integrated shelves into their Brooklyn living room, demonstrating the versatility of this design for displaying various knickknacks without creating clutter.
