TT shelves and table with floating surfaces by Ron Gilad | design
Ron Gilad, an Israeli designer, has expanded his TT furniture collection with a modular shelving system and an oval table. The TT series, which debuted earlier this year from Italian brand Adele-C, is characterized by thin metal frames that encase wooden surfaces, giving the impression that the surfaces are hovering without support. The initial collection consisted of low tables where the wooden surfaces were attached using magnets, allowing for easy removal and repositioning. Gilad described the original concept as a hybrid between a tray and a coffee table, emphasizing functionality and aesthetic lightness.
The newly introduced TT3 shelving system is a direct evolution of the original table design, extending the concept vertically. It comprises tall single columns and a corner unit, designed to be combined in various configurations. Shelves can bridge the gaps between these structural elements, offering flexible storage solutions. The walnut shelves integrate magnets, enabling users to place and reposition them anywhere along the painted steel frames. This magnetic system enhances the modularity and adaptability of the shelving unit, allowing for customized arrangements to suit diverse needs and spaces. The frames are available in black or pearl grey, providing aesthetic versatility.
Each shelf in the TT3 system is engineered to support a weight of up to 15 kilograms. A subtle but significant design detail is the chamfered edge on each shelf, reminiscent of a typical serving tray. This chamfering serves a dual purpose: it visually lightens the profile of the shelf, contributing to the overall illusion of weightlessness, and it also makes the shelves easier to lift and manipulate. This thoughtful design element underscores Gilad's commitment to both form and function within the TT collection.
In addition to the shelving system, the expansion includes an oval table. Its surface is crafted from Italian walnut, aligning with the material palette of the existing TT series. This new table can be integrated seamlessly with other tables from the original collection, allowing for cohesive and expanded furniture arrangements. The design language of the entire TT collection maintains a consistent theme of apparent lightness and sophisticated simplicity, making the pieces adaptable to various interior contexts.
The designer's information highlights the core principles of the Tray Table Project, emphasizing its status as an iconic collection. The TT3 bookcase, or TT cubed, elevates the accent table concept while preserving its airy quality. The system's construction, based on two fundamental elements—a single column and a corner unit—enables endless combination possibilities, maximizing usable space through its clean and uncluttered composition. The magnetic system for shelf placement underscores the design's user-friendly nature. The shelving system's rectangular shelves/trays, made from Italian walnut, are securely held within painted steel structures, available in two sizes and specified colors. This modularity is a key feature, allowing for flexible arrangements and expansions. While each tray can support a substantial weight, wall attachment is recommended for enhanced stability, especially with larger configurations. The small tables, available in painted steel and three colors, feature either one round tray or up to three rectangular trays. The name TT, an abbreviation for Tray Table, encapsulates the essence of the design: a functional tray that transforms into a table, presenting a horizontal surface seemingly suspended within a metal cage. This latest expansion reinforces the collection's innovative approach to modular furniture design, offering both aesthetic appeal and practical adaptability.
Overall, the TT collection and its recent additions demonstrate Ron Gilad's consistent design philosophy, which blends minimalist aesthetics with practical, user-centric features. The use of high-quality materials like Italian walnut and painted steel, combined with intelligent magnetic mechanisms, allows for furniture pieces that are both visually striking and highly functional. The modularity of the TT3 shelving system, in particular, offers significant flexibility for users to customize their storage and display solutions, reflecting a contemporary demand for adaptable home furnishings. The visual lightness achieved through thin frames and chamfered edges creates an elegant and modern look, suitable for diverse interior styles. The collection's evolution from simple coffee tables to comprehensive shelving systems showcases a cohesive design language focused on perception, balance, and practical innovation in furniture design.
