7 walk-in shower mistakes to avoid, according to experts

Walk-in showers have moved beyond being exclusive features of luxury hotels and weekend retreats, becoming a sought-after addition in many homes. Pinterest searches for 'Amazing showers walk-in' and 'doorless shower ideas' have significantly increased, indicating their rising popularity for 2023. While they offer a luxurious feel, it's crucial to be aware of common mistakes to avoid before installing one. One of the primary pitfalls is neglecting the increased moisture levels a walk-in shower introduces to a bathroom. Unlike traditional shower enclosures, walk-ins allow steam and humidity to spread freely. This can lead to issues like mould and damp growth. To counteract this, it is essential to install a powerful extractor fan or ensure adequate ventilation through a window. Addressing this proactively helps maintain the bathroom's structural integrity and hygiene. Another frequent error is failing to install a splash guard. Although this adds to the overall cost, a splash guard is invaluable for protecting surrounding floors and walls from water damage. It reduces the frequency of cleaning around the shower area and, more importantly, minimizes the risk of damp and mould caused by water leakage. This investment ensures the longevity and cleanliness of the bathroom space. Many individuals also overlook the need for proper insulation around the shower area. Because walk-in showers are open, they tend to retain less heat than enclosed showers, which can be an unpleasant experience for those who prefer a warm showering environment. Solutions include installing additional wall or ceiling insulation, which, while costly, provides a permanent fix. Alternatively, placing a heat source opposite the open end of the shower or investing in heated bathroom flooring can also help maintain warmth. Misjudging the required space is another common mistake. Contrary to popular belief, walk-in showers often demand more space than enclosed units due to the need for a buffer zone to prevent splashing. Therefore, they may not be ideal for small bathrooms unless careful planning ensures sufficient room for functionality and water containment. Accurate measurements and a realistic assessment of the available space are critical. Opting for a standard design instead of a bespoke one can also lead to problems, especially in uniquely shaped areas like loft rooms with eaves. A pre-fabricated glass frame might not fit flush, creating gaps where water can leak. A custom-designed shower, with glass and wall surfaces cut precisely to fit the space, is highly recommended to achieve a seamless finish and prevent water ingress. Ignoring the necessity of slopes for drainage is a significant oversight. A level floor within a walk-in shower will inevitably result in drainage issues and potential flooding. Experts advise a minimum of a 2% slope in the shower space to ensure water properly flows towards the drain, preventing water accumulation and associated problems. Finally, inadequate waterproofing is a critical error that can severely compromise the longevity of a walk-in shower. Beyond just the shower tiles, all surrounding walls and floors must be properly waterproofed to withstand constant water exposure. Various waterproofing options, such as insulation mats or liquid foil, are crucial for sealing corners and ensuring the shower remains durable for many years. Neglecting this step can lead to costly repairs and structural damage down the line. Planning ahead and addressing these potential issues will ensure a luxurious and problem-free walk-in shower experience. #WalkInShower #BathroomRenovation #HomeDesignMistakes #MoistureControl #SplashGuard #BathroomInsulation #SpacePlanning #BespokeDesign #DrainageSolutions #Waterproofing #WalkInShower #BathroomRenovation #HomeDesignMistakes #MoistureControl #SplashGuard #BathroomInsulation #SpacePlanning #BespokeDesign #DrainageSolutions #Waterproofing
