‘we’ve made the most of our galley kitchen’ - 2 Aug 2022 - Your Home Magazine
Lorraine and Neil Dengel, after moving from London to Poole, Dorset, sought a better work-life balance and began renovating their Victorian semi-detached home. Their first project focused on the kitchen, which featured a challenging galley layout. Despite the narrow space, they envisioned a vibrant, retro-themed kitchen with a modern twist, drawing inspiration from 1950s American diners for its pastel-pop color scheme and white units, while also incorporating 1960s influences. This design approach aimed to make the kitchen feel brighter and more spacious.
A key element of their renovation involved bespoke storage solutions and custom joinery. Neil, a talented joiner and co-owner of young-dengel.com, a company specializing in unique, freestanding furniture, took charge of crafting many of these elements himself. He designed and built mid-century modern-style wood paneling to conceal the cloakroom door, giving the galley kitchen a more streamlined and polished appearance. Lorraine expressed particular admiration for this feature, describing the slatted walnut strips as “gorgeous.” Neil also created walnut veneer units for one wall, mirroring the style of those on the opposite side, which featured routed bespoke details.
The couple prioritized sourcing materials and trades locally, reflecting their commitment to supporting their community. Their design choices extended to selecting a retro range cooker and unusual tiles, all contributing to a kitchen that Lorraine describes as “bursting with personality.” The combination of handmade units in sunny colors, custom joinery, and carefully chosen appliances and finishes allowed them to transform a potentially awkward galley space into a highly functional, aesthetically pleasing, and unique kitchen that perfectly blended retro charm with modern sensibilities.
