Boffi unveils "evolved" version of Zaha Hadid Design's Cove kitchen
Zaha Hadid Design has collaborated with Italian brand Boffi to release an updated version of its Cove kitchen island, marking Boffi's 90th anniversary. This new iteration, made from materials such as Corian and wood, maintains the original's sinuous aesthetic while introducing a modular system for enhanced flexibility. The initial Cove kitchen, launched in 2017, was a customisable island integrated into Zaha Hadid Architects' 520 West 28th project in New York. The 2024 model distinguishes itself by refining the design; it no longer features the prominent cavity that characterized its predecessor. Instead, the updated Cove kitchen incorporates two side panels with rounded edges, which gently curve downwards along the periphery of the island, contributing to a more streamlined and contemporary appearance. This evolution aims to build upon the foundational concept of the 2017 design while adapting it to contemporary preferences for modularity and refined aesthetics.
Zaha Hadid Design highlights that the new piece adheres to the "inherent logic" of the original Cove concept, translating it into a modular system. This approach provides greater versatility for users, allowing the kitchen island to integrate seamlessly into diverse interior environments. The design process for the Cove kitchen was inspired by the architectural principles seen in Zaha Hadid's renowned projects, including the MAXXI National Museum of XXI Century Arts in Rome and the Heydar Aliyev Center in Baku. These architectural influences are evident in the kitchen's fluid lines and sculptural form, which transform a functional appliance into a central, convivial space within a home.
Boffi emphasizes that the Cove kitchen encapsulates Zaha Hadid's visionary design philosophy, blending architectural rigor with a forward-thinking conceptual approach. The current version features a grey-hued marbled countertop, which further enhances its elegant and sophisticated appeal. The product will be available for purchase following Milan Design Week, a significant event in the international design calendar, where it is expected to be showcased. This collaboration underscores Boffi's commitment to design integrity and craftsmanship, consistently partnering with leading designers and architects to produce innovative products. Past collaborations include the Combine Evolution kitchen by Piero Lissoni and a modular kitchen system by Patricia Urquiola, reflecting Boffi's ongoing dedication to pushing the boundaries of kitchen design. The updated Cove kitchen represents a continuation of this legacy, offering a blend of artistic vision and practical functionality to modern living spaces.
